Jewel Sunshine Feaster Bassett
NORMAN — Jewel Bassett, 95, formerly of Norman, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Havenbrook Funeral Home chapel in Norman. Interment will follow at the Norman IOOF Cemetery.
Mrs. Bassett was born June 29, 1916, to Beaulah and Vincent Feaster in Gracemont. She was a graduate of Gracemont High School and attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha. She eloped with Fred Bassett in Cordell on May 26, 1933, just after her high school graduation. He preceded her in death in March 2004, after nearly 71 years of marriage.
Jewel and Fred worked together, traveled together, volunteered together and enjoyed all things OU together. She served as a bookkeeper in various businesses that she and Fred owned throughout the years, including a John Deere dealership in Chickasha and a Volkswagen dealership in San Angelo, Texas, before moving to Norman in 1967. In Norman, Jewel and Fred were active members of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class there. Jewel was a member of the UMW and the McFarlin Care Ministry. She was also actively involved with the Salvation Army Auxiliary, Norman Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and the Retired Senior Citizens Program. When not volunteering in the community, Jewel and Fred loved traveling and achieved their goal of visiting all 50 states and many European countries. They also loved the Sooners and were OU football season ticket holders for more than 50 years. Besides football, they could be found at most in-town OU sporting events. Their greatest passion, though, was spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2005, after Fred’s death in 2004, Jewel moved from Norman to Wichita Falls, Texas.
Mrs. Bassett was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jo Nell Bassett Millington; husband, Fred Bassett; two brothers and one sister.
She is survived by a brother, Quentin Feaster of Elk City; son, Fred E. Bassett and wife Lynn, of Wichita Falls, Texas; son-in-law, Seth Millington and wife, Ellen, of Norman; grandsons Will Millington, David Millington and wife Lisa of Norman, Doug Millington and wife Amy of Denver, Colo., Jeff Millington and wife Tammy of Moore and Brad Bassett and wife Stacy of Rockwall, Texas; granddaughters Sharon Millington Drea and husband Mike of Bartlesville and Melanie Bassett Wright and husband Greg of Wichita Falls; 13 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd., Norman, OK 73069, or to the charity of your choice.
Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
