Death struck twice in the family of Dr. Wallace Bassett, pastor of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon within two hours when his wife, Mrs. Lottie Bassett, 52 years old, died after a short illness and his brother was killed in an accident in Missouri.
Mrs. Bassett was stricken gravely ill at 4 p.m. Sunday and died a short time after reaching Baylor Hospital. She attended the morning services at Cliff Temple and planned to attend the night service. Her husband was near when she became violently ill and soon lost consciousness.
Dr. Bassett’s brother, the Reverend George H. Bassett, 60, pastor of First Christian Church at Moberly, Missouri, was killed when his car and a motor train collided at a crossing twelve miles east of that city as he was en route to Middle Grove to hold services. The car was dragged 100 yards.
      Former Texas Pastor
Mr. Bassett went to Missouri from Breckenridge a year ago after having held many pastorates in Texas and Missouri cities. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bassett is survived by a son and three daughters, Wallace H. Bassett, Mrs. Travis Johnson and Mrs. John J. Selig Jr. of New York City and Mrs. Wesley Tomlinson of Atlanta, Georgia. Wallace Bassett is a medical student at Baylor University school of medicine.
Dr. and Mrs. Bassett would have celebrated their thirty-second wedding anniversary on Dececember 29. She had been in ill-health for several years but relatives believed her condition was growing better. She was active for many years in affairs of Cliff Temple and the Baptist denomination, in which she was a leader in woman’s work.
      Friend Fills Pulpit.
When news reached Cliff Temple Church at Tenth and Beckley that Mrs. Bassett had died a hush passed over the audience which was gathering for the evening worship. A short prayer service was conducted and then Dr. C.S. McKinney, pastor of the San Benito Baptist Church, went to the pulpit to fill the place of his friend, Dr. Bassett, whom he had known for many years.
Dr. McKinney is in Dallas attending a church conference. Dr. Bassett called him soon after Mrs. Bassett’s death and asked that he deliver the sermon for the evening. Mrs. Bassett’s daughters are expected to reach Dallas Monday, when arrangements will be completed. Only a few months ago Dr. and Mrs. Bassett returned from New York City, where they visited their three daughters, all then living in that city. Since the visit Mrs. Tomlinson has moved to Atlanta.
