      Romans, Chapter 12
Love must be sincere... cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord... Share with the Lord?s people who are in need. Practice hospitality...Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.?
This passage from the Book of Romans represents the life and spirit of our brother Jamie, as he was affectionately called by those who knew and loved him. He truly honored God's commandment to love one another as we love ourselves. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, his parents, James and Geraldine Bassett, were enormously proud to welcome his birth.
One of Jamie's great spiritual gifts from God was his gift of empathy, hospitality and compassion towards others. He truly loved people and never hesitated to open his heart others, to share with others, to keep an eye towards that person whom others overlooked or dismissed. He was a great listener who made everyone feel as if they mattered and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He was a man of all people, with a heart for all people. This was his ministry and his legacy. Jamie's legacy as servant of God's goodwill and outreach towards others is one that we will always cherish as a family and is one that he will be most remembered for.
Jamie had other gifts as well. He was an avid reader with a keen interest in current events and politics. He was an excellent athlete and played football at Walter Hines Page School High school, and NC A&T State University. He was a born entrepreneur who was astute about business and skilled in creating small business endeavors that ranged from HVAC maintenance to electrical engineering to personalized barber services. Much like his mother Geraldine, he was an amazing cook who enjoyed serving others, it was extension of his gift for hospitality and outreach towards others.
Friendship was important to Jamie and he treasured his friends. He also loved and cherished his family. He was loyal and protective of us beyond words. God and family were his true North and the way he treated others showed that. His loss leaves such a big void in our family circle.
He proudly leaves as part of his legacy the unwavering love and support of his beloved mother Geraldine Joyner Bassett (Greensboro, NC), two beautiful sisters Kimberly Bassett (Washington, DC) and Odetta Bassett (Greensboro, NC), whose kindness and unshakeable bond as devoted siblings will never be forgotten, as well as a host of relatives and friends from near and far.
We will miss Jamie immensely but we are comforted that he is now in the nearer presence of our Lord and our beloved father, James Bassett, who preceded him in joining God?s Angels. We are grateful to have shared our lives with him and to have known his love and light. May God rest his soul.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 15, 2019 at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N. O'Henry Blvd., Greensboro at 2:00 pm.
