ELIZABETH BASSETT, daughter of James Bassett and Dorcas Clark
Documents enclosed to support this analysis--documents numbered on back of each page to correspond with numbers below:
Elizabeth Bassett was born around 1820 in KY. She married Minor Horton on February 27, 1840 in Ripley County, IN. (1) Elizabeth's brother Josiah Bassett married Minor's sister Elizabeth Horton on September 16, 1840 in neighboring Jefferson County, IN. (2)
Elizabeth and Minor were living on the Bassett land in the 1850 Ripley County census record. (3) They were living among the Bassett brothers and sisters with their families. Father James was deceased (1849) and mother Dorcas was living close by with two teen children still at home. Elizabeth's cousin James Bassett lived next door, Uncle Thomas Bassett lived next to him, sister Susan and Robert Henson and sister Nancy and Thomas Kinneth nearby. (4)
By 1860 Elizabeth and Minor were living in neighboring Jefferson County, IN.(5)Then by 1870 they were across the Ohio River in Trimble County, KY. (6)
Josiah and Elizabeth Bassett were mentioned in wills of both fathers. The will of James Bassett dated July 27, 1839 listed some of his children by name. He mentioned specifics for "all my children" and listed Josiah as the executor. His death date was July 18, 1849 and the probate record date was August 7, 1849. (7) The will of James Horton was dated March 16, 1861. Minor Horton, Josiah and Elizabeth Bassett were mentioned by name. Josiah was again the executor. (8)
Bassett land was deeded from Josiah and Elizabeth Horton Bassett on September 26, 1846 to Elizabeth and Minor's father (Bassett in-law) James Horton for only 100 dollars. (9) This same land was deeded by William H. Bassett (son of uncle Thomas Bassett) to Josiah Bassett February 14, 1846. (10) Land that was adjacent to that land was deeded from James and Dorcas Bassett to Josiah Bassett on March 13, 1846. (11)
Bassett land was deeded from James and Dorcas Bassett on January 21, 1848 to Minor Horton. (12) On the same day, land was deeded from Minor and Elizabeth Horton to James Bassett. Mention was made in this deed to "deduct the lot of ground sold and deeded by George Roberts to the Baptist Church of Cross Plains." (13) James Bassett was buried a year later in the Cross Plains Baptist Church Cemetery. Some of this land, with mention of the Baptist Church of Cross Plains, had been previously deeded to Minor Horton by George Roberts for 50 dollars on December 18, 1847. (14)
Land was deeded from Minor and Elizabeth Horton to James Bassett on June 10, 1850. This James Bassett was a cousin of Elizabeth's (son of Uncle Thomas) who was living with his wife Delia next to Elizabeth and Minor Horton in the 1850 census. (15 and 3). On that same day, land was also deeded from Elizabeth and Minor to Harman Vortman who lived on the other side of Elizabeth and Minor in the 1850 census. (3) Another deed dated the same date, to Harman Vortman from Elizabeth and Minor Horton, mentions land previously owned by James Bassett which was sold to Minor Horton. (16). Then on June 17, 1850 a portion of land was deeded back to Elizabeth and Minor from Harman Vortman with reference to the June 10, 1850 exchange. (17)
The census was taken on August 22, 1850. (3)
Elizabeth and Minor deeded land to Francis O'Neal on November 27, 1854. (18). Francis was married to Elizabeth Bassett's sister, Margaret Bassett O'Neal. Elizabeth and Minor moved to neighboring Jefferson County, IN.
Additonal information included from The McQuitty/McQuiddy/McQuady Family, by Edna Kay Herbst Day, published 1984 and found in the DAR Library. (19) A picture included of the plaque to honor the American Revolution Patriots who came to Ripley County from 1818-1840. (20)
Additional land deed mentioning other Bassett family members referred to above such as William H. Bassett, James and Delia Bassett, Josiah Bassett. This was dated March 16, 1854 after Elizabeth's uncle Thomas Bassett's death in March 1853. (21)
Although I could find no birth or death record for Elizabeth Bassett Horton after extensive research, I feel that all this information together leads to the conclusion that she WAS indeed the child of James and Dorcas Bassett.
As an added notation, ALL the Ripley County, IN Bassetts that I have found are directly descended from the common Revolutionary War ancestor William Bassett, Sr. William and wife Peggy were buried on the family farm, high up on a hill. Their graves are now surrounded by large trees and brush, and a barbed wire fence to keep out animals.
Thanks very much for the consideration.
