Prominent Harrisville Man Dies After Extended Illness
Harrisville, January 21 - George Craig Bassette, 56, former Northern New York lumberman and for the past ten years proprietor of a service station at Harrisville, died at 5 p.m. Friday at his home. Death followed an extended illness. He had been in poor health since he underwent an operation in April.
He was born in Wilbur, Ontario, February 4, 1882, a son of the late John and Jeanne Craig Bassette. When a young man he came to this country with his parents and settled in the vicinity of Harrisville.
For many years he was engaged with his fathers and brothers, Ross Bassette, John Bassette, both of Harrisville, and the late Lloyd Bassette in lumber operations throughout northern New York. For a time they directed their lumber operations from Star Lake and vicinity.
Later George Bassette became affiliated with the Diana Paper Company at Harrisville. Then years ago he left the lumber business to take over the operation of a service station, located in the site of the old Kenwood hotel here.
In 1905, Mr. Bassette married Miss Mabel Nora Tiffany, Harrisville, in a ceremony performed here.
Mr. Bassette was for years a member of Masonic bodies in Harrisville, Carthage and Gouverneur. He was a past member of the Carthage Chapter, No. 259, R.A.M. and the Gouverneur Commandery of Knights Templar.
He was also active in community affairs here, serving at one time as village trustee, town collector and village assessor. At the time of his death, Mr. Bassette was a member of the Harrisville board of health and was a trustee of the Church of Christ here. He had lived in Harrisville since coming to this country.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Mervil George Bassette, of Adams Center and Harold Edwin Bassette, who was engaged with him in the operation of the service station at Harrisville; three brothers, John and Ross Bassette, of Harrisville and WIlliam C. Bassette, 1001 Myrtle ave., Watertown; three sisters, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Deachman, of North Woodstock, New Hampshire; Mrs. Robert (Mary) Mannigan, of Harrisville and Mrs. Varick (Christina) Stanford, of Potsdam. A daughter, Evelyn Mable, died in 1927.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 from the Church of Christ, Reverend W.C. Chapman, pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the Harrisville cemetery. A Masonic service was held at this home Sunday afternoon at which time the members of the local chapter paid their respects in a body.
