E.R. Bassett Dies, Aged 72
Star Lake, June 25 - Edward Russell Bassett, 72, Wanakena, a retired
steel worker for Jones & Laughlin Steep Corporation, Benson Mines, died
Wednesday noon in the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg, where he
had undergone surgery on a hip fracture, he sustained Saturday in a fall
at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wanakena Presbyterian
church, with Rev. Arthur Guyette, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in
Oswegatchie Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Hawley funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 and
Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Surviving Mr. Bassett are his wife, Mrs. Marie Gull Bassett; a son,
Edward R., Jr., Wanakena; three sisters, Mrs. Mae D. Gordon, and Mrs.
Jessie B. Johnson, both of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. Minnie Bartelme,
Russell and six grandchildren.
Mr. Bassett was born in Houghton, Mich., Oct. 3, 1891, a son of Edward
and Tamozine Matthews Bassett. He graduated from Houghton High School
and attended the Michigan College of Mines and Technology in Houghton.
He moved to Wanakena in 1942 and was first employed by the Warden Allen
Construction company. He later was employed by the Jones & Laughlin
Steel Corporation.
