Arnold Bass, 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 19, 2018. He was born in Chicago on May 12, 1935 and moved with his family to Michigan City in 1940. Arnold graduated from Elston High School in 1953 and from Ball State Teachers College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and later a Masters of Arts Degree in 1960. While working at Westphal’s Drug Store during high school, he met the love of his life and his “guardian angel”, Barbara Snyder. He and Barbara married on June 29, 1957.
Arnold began his teaching career at Elston Senior High in 1957, teaching US History and Government and early in his career, coached the girls 7th, 8th and 9th grade cheerleaders, was a High School Class Sponsor and was appointed to the position of Chairman of the Elston Junior High Geography Department. Beginning in 1970, he served as the Assistant Principal at Barker Junior High and while at Barker, was recognized by the staff for his dedication for improving human relations for the 1975-76 school year. In 1978, Arnold served as Assistant Principal at Krueger Junior High, retiring in 1995. While at Krueger, the Board of School Trustees awarded him with a Certificate of Commendation for recognition for his special achievement of the Krueger Stand Team and the1994-95 Krueger Kares Award for Service to Youth.
Arnold was one of three school administrators and two police officers who attended the Flint, Michigan Police-School Liaison Officers Clinic and received a diploma in 1972. He and the others inaugurated the program in Michigan City. Mayor Randy Miller appointed him to the Budgetary Community workshop to study and make recommendations relative to the City Budget for the Street and Traffic Department.
He was appointed chairman for the first selection committee for Michigan City Area Schools Wall of Fame. Arnold served many years as a member of the North Central Association of Secondary School’s committees to evaluate schools.
Arnold was active in many organizations, serving as Chairman of the Board of First Trust Credit Union, President of the Dunes Chapter of Credit Unions, President of the La Porte County Historical Society, President of the Flying Carpet Travelogue Association and later its Executive Director, past President of the La Porte County Retired Teachers Association and former Area One Director to the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He gave several years of service to the Boy Scouts on the Commissioner’s Staff, District Committee, Advancement Committee, Camp Facilities Committee, District Advancement Chairman, Cub Pack Committee Chairman and a member of the Executive Board of Northern Indiana Council Boy Scouts of America. Arnold spent two summers as Camp Program Director and one summer as Camp Director at ToPeNeBee Scout Camp in Michigan City. He was awarded the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow in recognition of exceptional service, personal effort and unselfish interest in the welfare of others and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Michigan City.
Arnold enjoyed woodcarving and served as a past President of the Duneland Woodcarver’s Association and taught several classes of woodcarving for the La Porte City Park Department. He chaired several committees of the Michigan City Lion’s Club and was a past President. In 2006, he authored the book, Up Close and Personal: A History of La Porte County and in 2015, was recognized with the La Porte County Historian of the Year Award. Arnold also penned a weekly local history column in the News Dispatch titled, “Did You Know”.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents Meyer and Rose (Wilkomer) Bass and brother Richard Bass. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Snyder); children Kimberly Bass and Michael (Rita) Bass (both of Indianapolis); five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother Roger Bass (Panama City, Florida).
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2018 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and Monday, July 23, 2018 from 10:30 to time of service at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington Street Michigan City, Indiana 46360.
Funeral Service held on Monday, July 23, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home with Pastor Al Lorentzen officiating. Services will conclude at the Funeral Home and cremation will take place.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 818 Franklin Street, Michigan City, Indiana or to the donor’s choice.
