Mary Bassett, age 20 years, wife of Thomas Bassett in Salem, New York, on 6 May 1838.

      La Harper, September 23, 1886

DIED - Mrs. Addie B. Myers, wife of Richard Myers and daughter of Thomas and Emily C. Bassett, died at her home in this city at 8 o'clock, Monday morning, September 20, 1886.
Mrs. Myers was born at Cambridge, New York October 10th, 1843. The family came west and settled in La Harpe in 1849. She was married to Richard Myers at Terre Haute, Ill Oct. 22, 1863. Eight children were born to them, five sons and three daughters. Three have passed to the other
shore and wait her coming. A husband, three sons and two daughters mourn the loss of a loving and dear wife and mother. For eight years the fell destroyer, consumption, has been working inroads upon her health and for the past year only her indomitable will has kept her alive. Her's has been a sweet life, and to know her was to be made better from the influence of acquaintance; of social and lively nature fond of music and entertaining with sweet grace, she called about her the young and incompationable and pleasant manner won their confidence, and in a thousand ways pointed them to the Higher Life. She was, too, a friend and confident, of the old, and took a lively interest in their matters, all were glad of the friendship of so excellent a woman. She was strong in mind, but frail in body. Long after the strength of the body had given out, the mind remained clear and doubly perceptable. Her's was a sweet trusting faith; abiding and consoling and those who sat beside her during the past few weeks say they never heard sweeter words spoken nor more comforting her and the children HE gave her. "The Lord has given me the promise," she would say in sweet confidence, "that my children will be given me Over There," After her voice had failed, that only a whisper could be made, she would join in the songs, she would request the children to sing for her. She lived a loving and happy life and when the end came it was peaceful and prayerful. Her mother and youngest sister spent the greater part of the summer with her, and then a few weeks since Mrs. Wright came from her faraway Texas home. She came unannounced and they feared it might startle her too much to have her go in suddenly. But when they went to prepare her, she quietly said, "I know that you would tell me; my prayer is answered - Emma has come." With intuitive knowledge she anticipated; there were no surprises, no shocks. Her abiding faith gave her peace of mind and rest. She gave the minutest details and arranged every matter for preparing her body for the burial, and selected the text and hymns for use at the services.
The funeral occurred at Terre Haute, Tuesday afternoon 2 o'clock. A large gathering of friends met the family at the Baptist Church, where Mrs. Myers had long been a worshiper and mingled their tears with the bereaved ones. Eld Littleton preached from the text (her selection) "In my Father's house are many mansions." and the choir sang "Over There", "Shall We Gather at the Rivers" and "Sweet Bye and Bye". Sadly we write these words but the sweet recollections of the past will make her memory ever blessed, her friendship ever revered. Cheerfully and happily she pushed out into the Dark Stream but she had no fears. In her last moments she saw friends on the Other Shore beckoning her, a smile of recognition to them and the Dark Shadows of the Valley closed about the watchers.
