- Notes from Robert Bassett:
"Born March 29, 1881 at 2 a.m. Was of average height, a slender and muscular
man. Had a full head of dark brown hair, brown eyes.
Apprenticed as a shipwright in Plymouth, but was a dairy farmer after emigrating
to Canada.
Married to Olive Knight on July 117, 1907 at St. Augustine's Church, Plymouth,
England. Carrie, Bessie and the boys Leslie and Gerald attended the wedding.
Gerald, who was not yet six years of age was wearing a white sailor suit and
unfortunately sat down upon a freshly painted seat at the railway station. He
attended the wedding with green paint on his rear.
Olive died on the 18th of October 1910. She was reading a letter
while crossing the street outside of the post office in Globe, Arizona and was
hit by the only auto in town. She became the first pedestrian casualty to an
automobile in that town. Her body was returned to England and she was buried
in Plymouth. Arthur remarried on December 11, 1911, to Lillian Elizabeth
Williams at Ottawa, Canada. He worked on one of the big CP Hotels, the Chateau
Laurier, in Ottawa. He was responsible for laying out the circular staircase
and did so with only a square. Later moved to Lulu Island, Richmond, British
Columbia, worked for the shipyard (perhaps Coglin Shipyards) converting ships
to grain carriers. He later experimented with chicken farming and small fruits
before settling on dairy farming which he carried on until the mid fifties.
The herd was purebred Guernsey milk cows."
