NOTE: The following letter seems to pertain to a son of Uri Bassett who would have been born between 1832 and 1837 and was alive in 1884. The birth fits Edwin Bassett. However the Family Bible note indicates Edwin died before his first birthday.
Law Office of Gustav A. Laubscher, 121 Superior St. Cleveland, O., Dec.
31st 1884
Dear Sir, Upon the facts stated by you for opinion as to whether you are a citizen of the United States, being in substance that your father, Uri Bassett, was born in the State of New York and resided there until between 25 + 30 years of age, when he went to Canada to teach school and remained there about seven years, during which time he married and you were born, that he then came to Michigan where he remained (with the exception of about three years which loss of sight and poverty obliged him
to spend in Canada near his wife's former home) until his death at the age of 72 years in 1880, exercising the right of suffrage from your earliest remembrance to the time of his death; that from all this information you are able to gather (your mother being dead) he never intended to remain or live in Canada or relinquish his citizenship in the U.S. and that you have been a resident of the U.S. since you were eleven months of age and have always intended to remain a citizen here, I would say that in my judgement
you are a born citizen of the United States.
Very Respt. Gustave Laubscher
