(1923-2016)
Arthur (Art) John LaMontagne, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, in Naples, Florida. Born in Northampton, MA September 28, 1923, to Edwin and Beatrice (Soulliere) LaMontagne, Art attended Northampton High School before becoming a B24-Liberator pilot for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, based in London, England. Upon his return, Art graduated Amherst College in 1948 and went on to marry the former Laurel Taferner in 1950. The two resided in Greenfield, MA where Art operated Arts Auto Sales and later, LaMontagne Realty.
Upon retiring, Art enjoyed his summers on the Cape in South Yarmouth, MA and his winters in Naples, FL where he eventually became a full-time resident. He enjoyed spending time gardening, golfing, dancing and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Art is survived by his four children, Gail Seamonds and her husband Perry of Fort Myers, FL, Gary LaMontagne and his wife Susan of Easthampton, MA, Grant LaMontagne and his wife Judy of Neenah, WI, and Greg LaMontagne and his wife Nancy of Stratford, CT, his sister Anne Hull of Cocoa Beach, FL and his beloved companion Jeanne Slenker of Naples, FL. He will be missed dearly by his six grandchildren, Todd, Laurel, Ryan, Sabrina, Sarah, and Heather, as well as by his several nieces and nephews. Art is preceded in death by his parents, his first born Arthur Jr., his brothers Edwin Jr and LeRoy LaMontagne, his sister Jeanne Wade, his former wife Laurel Bassett and his beloved companion Patricia Kane.
A celebration of his life and the Rite of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 221 Federal Street, Greenfield, MA, at 10 am on Thursday, December 29, 2016 to be followed by rites of committal and burial in Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA. Full military honors are to be observed with a detachment of the 54th Massachusetts Army National Guard in attendance, assisted by the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295 of South Deerfield, MA. Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening, December 28, 2016, from 5?7 pm, at McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA.
