David "Deacon" Bassett, son of Henry and Mary (Percy) Bassett, was born 6 Apr 1778 in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He died in 1848. He married (1) Sally. She died in Victor, New York, aged 35, published in the newspaper on 23 Aug 1814. He married (2) Lucinda
Coggswell on 5 Nov 1814 in Mendon, New York. She was born in Otsego County, New York in 1796. She died in Illinois in 1861. They were married in New York State and resided there until the death of David.
David was a farmer. He served as a soldier in the War of 1812. Lucinda moved to Illinois to live with her children after the death of David. Lucinda was still in Livingston County, New York during the United States Census on 1850.
Lucinda Cogswell Bassett submitted a "Form of Declaration for Widow of a Deceased Officer or Soldier" on 21 Apr 1855 in order to apply for bounty land as a widow under the terms of federal legislation act approved 3 Mar 1855. In this form, it is stated that she, age 60 and a resident of Nunda, New York, appeared before a justice of the peace and declared herself to be: The widow of David Bassett, deceased, who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Morehouse in the Regiment of Militia commanded by Col. Chapin in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812 and was in the battle of Black Rock on the 30th day of December 1813 in New York, that her husband volunteered at Victor, Ontario County on or about the 25th day of December 1813 to defend Buffalo and Blak Rock and was in the Battle of Black Rock as above mentioned. She further states that she was married to the said David Bassett in Mendon, Ontario County, New York on the 5th day of November, 1814, by one Mr. Braman a Gospel minister and that her name before her said marriage was Lucinda Cogswell, that her said husband died
at Portage, New York, on the 6th day of Nov 1848.
