9. - Y. 1/c William Travis Bassett, born September 19, 1923. son of Mrs. Aileen Bassett of Avery, Texas. Volunteered November 23, 1940, at Dallas, Texas, in the Navy. Trained at San Diego, California. Overseas from March, 1941, to September 1943, in Aleutian Islands, Pearl Harbor, Panama, Attu, and Atlantic Coast. Awarded American Defense with a Star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Commendation, Good Conduct, and Victory Medals. Discharged June 26, 1946.

William T. Bassett of Waco, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 7, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in King, North Carolina, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements for the service and committal are through Slate Funeral Home, Inc. 132 E. Dalton Rd., King, North Carolina, 336-983-5176. William was born September 19, 1923, in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Homer and Cannie Bassett. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was active in the defense of our country during Pearl Harbor and the Korean conflict. William attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He retired as Chief of Chaplains from the Veterans Administration Regional Hospital in Waco. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Eva Maude Bassett. He is survived by his daughter, Melanie Garrett; grandchildren, Jonathan and Lydia Garrett; and his son, Randall K. Bassett. Reverend William Travis Bassett
Bassett - Waco, Texas - Reverend William Travis Bassett, 85, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008. He was born September 19, 1923 to Homer T. and Aileen Lemon Bassett. Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife of 54 years, Eva Maude Campbell Bassett. He is survived by one son, Randall K. Bassett; one daughter, Melanie Bassett Garrett; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Lydia Garrett. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Mount Olive Baptist Church, King, North Carolina, with the Reverend Carl Goodman officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday evening at Slate Funeral Home in King.
