Charles J. Bassett Sr. (Picture included)
NAPLES, Fla. - Charles Joseph Bassett Sr., 89, of Naples died on April 4 after a short illness, surrounded by his family.He was born in Sandown, N.H., on Dec. 12, 1922, the son of the late Raymond K. Bassett and Priscilla Knights.He is survived by his best friend and wife of 64 years, Shirley Caraway Bassett of Naples; one daughter, Cheryl Spence of Naples; four sons, Charles Jr. of Freeport, Bahamas, Thomas of Newfields, N.H., Stephen of Fremont, N.H., and Jon of North Hampton, N.H. He will also be missed by his 12 grandchildren, Daniel Chick, Christopher Cote, Kerri Townsend, Jamie Koehler, Michelle Kendrick, Charles J. Bassett III, Elisabeth Bassett, Jon Bassett Jr., William Bassett, Charlene Hewitt, Thomas Bassett Jr., and Madison Bassett, and 12 great-grandchildren.Charles was the oldest of 16 siblings and is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Bassett of Sandown, N.H., Martha Sargent of Springfield, Va., and seven brothers, Donald of Northwood, N.H., Wendell of Epsom, N.H., William of Greensboro, Ga., David of East Hampstead, N.H., Kenneth of Sandown, N.H., Carroll of Sandown, N.H., and Irving of Sandown, N.H., along with many other extended family and friends. He was predeceased by siblings Eva Phillips, Hazel Marlow, Robert, Norman, Richard and Raymond.He graduated from Hampstead High School and the University of New Hampshire. Charles was a proud World War II <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/ww2/?personid=156908703&affiliateID=2373> veteran who drove half-tracks for the U.S. Army <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/army/?personid=156908703&affiliateID=2373>. He went on to help in the building of the Franklin Dam and had a passion for construction and heavy equipment as a longtime employee of RC Hazelton, receiving many accolades. In addition, he was a member of the Major John Sullivan Lodge for 60 years, as well as a Bektash Shriner. He served them both through years of charitable work.One of his much-loved hobbies was snowmobiling, and he has a great legacy of helping forge trails all across New Hampshire. He was a longtime member of NHSA, a Rockingham County director and advisor to NH Trails Bureau, member of Greatbay Snow Packers, North Hampton Sno-finders, Newfields Sno-raiders, and the Southern NH Trailblazers. Most notably he was a member of the first New Hampshire trail map committee, which was instrumental in the development of Rockingham Recreational Trail.Charles was a wonderful, hardworking man who will be missed dearly by friends and family. Although he's no longer with us, heaven has gained a wise, kindhearted patriot who will be remembered always.Services:Visiting hours will be at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Sandown on Friday, April 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will also be held at St. Matthews on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen on Monday, April 16 at 11:30 a.m. Donations in his name can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children-Boston, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02119, Attn: Development Center.
