      DEATH INVADED SANCTUARY SUNDAY
      Delavan Enterprise 8 Feb 1906

Sudden Calling of Charles A. Bassett Creates Consternation and Service is Dismissed.

Stricken with heart failure as he stood in his pew at the Methodist church, Charles A. Bassett dropped dead Sunday morning.
His death created consternation in the congregation, and services were abandoned. Equally throughout the city, as the dread news spread with lightning wings, a shock of surprise and sorrow was experienced in the sudden death of one so well known, so long a resident and so universally respected.
Mr. Bassett was a man of quick, active ways, stepping off like a youth of twenty rather than a man of eighty years, and this morning, being a little late, he had hurried to church, coming in just as the choir was singing, death undoubtedly being produced by over exertion.
Charles A. Bassett, son of the late Isaac and Elizabeth Bassett, was born Aug. 16th, 1826, at New Haven, Conn., coming to Wisconsin in 1847 and commencing work for himself as clerk in the general store of A.B. Jackson at Bell's Corners, town of Walworth.
Oct. 25th, 1853, he was married to Mary E. Sharp, eldest daughter of the late Captain John Sharp and Sarah Mather Sharp.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett commenced the journey of life together on a farm in the town of Bristol, twelve miles west of the city of Kenosha. In 1857 they sold their place and moved to the town of Hudson, purchasing a farm near Springfield, Walworth county. In 1862 they again sold out, and in 1864 purchased the Philip Mink farm, adjoining the Sharp property (now called Collie's Grove), on the south shore of Delavan Lake, of which they have since retained possession, and where they resided for thirty-four years. In 1898 they retired from farming and removed to Delavan, where they built a pleasant home and where they have since resided.
Three children were born to them. Ida May and Walter L, deceased, and Sarah E. Bassett, who has been a comfort and a blessing to them in their declining years.
Mr. Bassett came from good New England stock. He was first cousin of the late Captain Isaac Bassett, who was an employee of the U.S. Senate for sixty-four years, and had charge of the Senate chamber for over thirty years.
He was a man of unusual strength and physical power, scarcely having had a sick day in his entire life, and was an honest, industrious man of excellent habits. He loved his home, his church, his neighbors and friends, and held no ill-feeling toward any person, being genial, kind and companionable to all. He was a great reader and loved his books and paper; was a daily reader of his Bible, and his high aim and earnest desire was to lead an honest, upright Christian life. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church Oct. 12th, 1873.
Oct. 25th, 1903, Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebraeted their golden wedding at their residence on High street, this city, which was enjoyed by themselves and many friends who were present. The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock on Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Mr. White, of the Methodist church. Beautiful music was rendered by Miss Cornelia Powers, who sang "The Christian's Farewell" and "Crossing the Bar." He was laid to rest in the family burial lot in Spring Grove cemetery.
The sudden death of Mr. Bassett was not only a surprise, but a shock to the entire community, and especially to the deply bereaved wife and daughter, who survive to mourn the loss of a kind, devoted husband, and indulgent and affectionate father.
To the neighbors and friends who have so kindly remembered us in many ways in our sad bereavement, we desire to express our heartfelt thanks. Mary E Bassett, Birdie E. Bassett
