Hazel Banks Bassett
Hazel Banks Bassett, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2004. Hazel was a dedicated Christian woman. She had been cared for by her daughter, Barbara, for the past eight years. Hazel was born December 23, 1919, in West Terre Haute, Indiana, to Charles H. and Pearl E. (Kelly) Mortz. She married John J. Banks on May 18, 1935. He passed away in 1954. She then married Merrell Bassett in 1955. He died in 1968. She was predeceased in death by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Rayjond Mortz and a daughter, Darlynn Pearl Banks. Hazel is survived by her children: Barbara D. James and Leon, St. Joseph, MO, James J. Banks and Carol, of Checotah, Oklahoma, Patricia A. McConnell and John, Ada, Checotah, Oklahoma, Jeannette S. Huft and Mike, Brandon, South Dakota, Merrell I. Bassett and Teri, of Oklahoma and Muriel I. Underwood, Phoenix, Arizona; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Services: 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Central Christian Church. Inurnment at Ashland Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin after 3:00 p.m. Monday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at our Chapel. Mrs. Bassett will be remvoed from our Chapel Tuesday, to arrive at the Church, one hour prior to the service time. The family suggests donations to Central Christian Church.
