Brian Hannameyer, left, receives his Bob Bassett Badge of Courage Award from Tracy Busby, president of the Deputy Sheriffs Association. Calaveras County sheriff's deputies made their first presentation of the Bob Bassett Badge of Courage Award to Hannameyer and Ben Truman during a brief ceremony Saturday morning. Hannameyer, 16, is the son of Bill and Leslie Hannameyer and Truman, 11, is the son of Ron and Annette Truman. The boys' mothers were shot and killed near their Wallace home June 25. Their neighbor, Peter Chiesa, has been charged with the murders. Truman was running home to call authorities when the killings occurred. He and Hannameyer eventually telephoned 911 to report the incident. The award was made just before a softball game between the Deputy Sheriffs Association and officers from the California Highway Patrol at the Veterans Memorial District Park in Valley Springs. Truman could not be there, but DSA President Tracy Busby presented Hannameyer with a plaque. The award is named in honor of Deputy Bob Bassett, who is battling cancer, and is designed to honor those who show courage and have a positive impact on the community.
