James N. Bassett, 75, of Las Cruces, N.M., died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Mesilla Valley Hospice, La Posada. He was born March 27, 1933, in Edgewood, N.M., to Ray and Evelyn Bassett. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Las Cruces; two sons, Wendell Bassett of Phoenix, Ariz. and John Bassett of Las Cruces, N.M. Two brothers, Gordon Bassett of Alpine, Texas and Carroll Bassett of Edgewood, N.M., as well as two grandchildren, Creed and Kennon Bassett of Hartford, Wis. His parents, Ray and Evelyn and a sister, Phyllis, preceded him in death.
Jim was a native New Mexican. He chose to live life on his own terms and made strong friendships throughout his life. Some of Jim's hobbies over the years include hunting, bass fishing, motorcycle touring across the country and RVing. In addition to these joyful passions, he enjoyed his "computer time" and working around the home. Whatever he did, he did with gusto!
Jim was a devoted family man who took great joy as a husband, father and grandfather. Most of all, he was a great friend to many. Jim will be deeply missed, but all who knew him will take comfort in knowing he is in a better place. All of our lives have been enriched by his presence.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, N.M. 88005.
