      Turners Falls - John F. "Jack" Bassett, 86, of Turnpike Road, died Monday (August 27, 2012) at the Buckley HealthCare Center in Greenfield. He was born in Riverside, Gill, on July 15, 1926, the son of Clifton and Edith (Rosewarne) Bassett. Jack was a lifelong resident of Turners Falls and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School, Class of 1944. He continued his education at Arnold College, currently the University of Bridgeport. Jack was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was a biology teacher and the head football and track coach for many years prior to becoming the vice principal at Turners Falls High School. Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Lenore Varilly, on August 22, 1976, and his second wife, Laurel Taferner, on May 5, 2012. Among his survivors, Jack leaves two sons, Stephen Bassett of Turners Falls and Thomas Bassett of Auburn, New Hampshire; three daughters, Gail Byrnes of South Hamilton, Sheila Beck of Auburn, New Hampshire, and Julie Pelletier of Montague; a brother, Paul Bassett of Erving; a sister, Mary Lou Forbes of Keene, New Hampshire; 11 grandchildren, Nathan and Devin Byrnes, Kate Finn, Tiffany Carner, Jason Hair, Erin Pelletier, Casandra and MacKenzie Thompson, Daniel, Emilie and Kevin Bassett; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services, all in Turners Falls, will be held Saturday (September 1, 2012) at 9:15 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, with the Reverend Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday (August 31, 2012) from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
