Theresa Bassette
Theresa Bassette, beloved wife of the late Dr. Caesar S. Bassette Jr., loving mother of Cherie Pearl Bassette of Washington, D.C. and Steven Thomas (Thanaa) Bassette of Cincinnati; devoted sister of Sallie Looney of Tuskegee, AL, and Anita Louise Gavin of Washington, D.C.; grandmother of seven and two great-grandchildren. Departed, Dec. 26, 2010. Memorial Service will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2 at Zion Baptist Church, 630 Glenwood Ave., Rev. James H. Cantrell officiating. Renfro Funeral Services Inc. in charge of arrangements.

Theresa Augusta Bassette was tireless civic volunteer
Theresa Augusta Bassette who spent her life in loving serving her family died December 26, 2010, in Cincinnati. She was 91. Services were Jan. 2.
She was born to the late Annie (Koger) Gavin and Emmitt Gavin on August 16, 1919, in Macon, Mississippi. She was one of five loving sisters; Sallie B. Looney of (Tuskegee, AL), Celeste (Gavin) Dill of University City, MO, Wilhelmina Gavin of University City, MO, and Anita Louise Gavin of (Washington, D.C.) Sisters Celeste Dill and Wilhelmina Gavin preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bassette attended Tuskegee Institute for two years. She worked at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in E. St. Louis, IL as a medical records supervisor. During that time she met a medical student named Caesar Stevens Bassette Jr., who was working on his residency at the hospital. She married Caesar Stevens Bassette, Jr. MD on August 31, 1942 in Tuskegee, AL. The couple was blessed with two children, Cherie Pearl and Steven Thomas. Dr. Bassette preceded her in death on August 7, 2008 after 67 years of marriage.
The Bassettes moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957, at which time Dr. Bassette started his OB/ GYN practice. In 1960, after the birth of their first child, he informed his wife that it was time for her to stay home and take care of the children and the house.
Theresa Bassette was a very civic minded and spiritual woman. She belonged to several social clubs and was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church, where she served on the senior usher board.
She was also a member of The Moles, The LINKS (for which she served as the ticket chairman of the LINKS annual Ebony Fashion Show for many years), The Knockabouts, The Dames, The Little Saturday Night Bridge Club and The Cincinnati Contract Bridge Club of Madisonville. She also served on the Membership Board of the Melrose YMCA, where she was also a swimming instructor.
Mrs. Bassette was a member of the Senior Citizen Contract Bridge club at the YMCA. She was one of the founding members of Les Birdies Golf Club and former president of The Rockdale Elementary School PTA, where her children attended school. She was a former member of Jack and Jill Social Club. She gave tirelessly and unselfishly of herself to her family, friends and all of her social organizations.
She is survived by her daughter, Cherie Pearl Bassette of Washington, D.C. and son Steven "Fredd E. Redd" Thomas (Thanaa) Bassette of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren, Channel, Faiz, Zeinab, Dunya, Mohammed, Bailey and Caesar, two great-grandsons, Nehemiah and Khaleel, nieces, nephews and other family friends.
