Silas A. Bass, Ex-Machinist
Silas Arthur Bass, 85, formerly a machinist with the American Tobacco Co., died Monday at Freedman?s Hospital, 4th and W Streets, N.W., of a heart attack.
Born in Durham, N.C., he attended North Carolina State College. He was married in 1910 to the former Hattie Page of Durham, who died in 1949.
He worked for American Tobacco until his retirement in 1945.
Mr. Bass came to Washington in 1958 and moved to Baltimore, Md., last year.
A member of the Hayty Baptist Church, Durham, he served from 1916 to 1966 as deacon, moderator and clerk of the North Carolina Primitive Baptist Churches.
He leaves one brother, Clovis Adrian Bass of Wilmington, Del.; three daughters, Mrs. James Smith of Baltimore, Mrs. Robert H. Johnson of 5728 Luzon Ave. N.W., and Mrs. Chester Hood of 4229 Meade St. Ne., and one son, James Wesley Bass of Durham.
Services and burial will be Saturday in Durham.

Silas Arthur Bass
Funeral services for Silas Arthur Bass of Washington, formerly of Durham, who died Monday in a Washington hospital, will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at White Rock Baptist Church. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Flossie Smith of Baltimore, Mrs. Johnnie Johnson and Mrs. Sara Hood, both of Washington; one son, James Wesley Bass of Durham; and two brothers, Clovis A. Bass of Wilmington, Delaware and the Reverend Frederick Odell Bass of High Point.
