Kenneth Horn Bass
Kenneth Horn Bass, 80, of Okeechobee, Florida, passed away on Monday, January 18th, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Bartow, Florida and raised in Belle Glade by the late Avery and Maude Bass. After graduating from Belle Glade High, he began college in 1949 at the University of Florida. However, instead of being drafted, he joined the Air Force in 1950. He went through gunnery training and soon joined a crew on a B-29. His plane was shot down in July 1952 and he was captured and became a POW. He returned in September of 1953 after being traded for spies in the US. He separated from the military in September 1954. In spite of his being a POW, he was a very proud veteran and always praised the military. Medals awarded were National Defense Service Medal, Air Medal, UN Service Medal and Korean Service Medal. He became a builder, which he thoroughly enjoyed throughout his life. He was the owner of Bass’ Exxon in Okeechobee where he employed most of his family. He took pleasure in helping the community and his customers. His family wrote: he was a hardworking, honest, strong, and a loving man. He truly believed that if you worked hard, treated people right, and with a little luck from God, you could have a good life. He enjoyed sharing life stories with everyone he met and will be missed greatly by his family and everyone who knew him. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jowell Bass, sister Ann Cumpton, and loving wife of 30 years, Rosemary Bass. He is survived by his loving sister Nancy Bobbitt and husband Ed, his brother Lavon Bass and wife Gail, both of Okeechobee; two sons, Sam Bass and wife Jamie of Alma, Arkansas and Kenny Bass of Okeechobee; five daughters, Kim Bass of Okeechobee, Karla LeMaire and husband Norman of Raynham, Massachusetts, Shelby Kelly and husband Tim of Okeechobee, Shannon Stripling and husband Steve of Okeechobee, Lesli Owens and husband Ben of Ridgeville, South Carolina; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home. Graveside services with military honors will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Evergreen Cemetery.
