Daily Dispatch, Richmond, Virginia, Saturday, August 26, 1876
Death of Colin Bass, Formerly Superintendent Of the Penitentiary.
Colin Bass died at the residence of Mrs. Lucy A. Johnston on Sunday evening, August 20, 1876, in the seventieth year of his age.
Mr. Bass was born in Chesterfield county, Va., but spent his youthful days mostly in Powhatan county, from whence he went to Richmond, where he was engaged in business for many years. More than thirty years ago he came to Roanoke county, where he married Miss Nancy McClanahan, daughter of Colonel Elijah McClanahan. Here he has lived ever since, with the exception to two years that he was superintendent of the State penitentiary, having held that office until the 2d of April, 1865, when Richmond was evacuated. Mr. Bass held positions of trust and responsibility, public and private, for many years of his life, having been a member of the Legislature for ten years, when he was elected superintendent of the State penitentiary; and having often been appointed guardian and executor and administrator. In all these positions and office, it may be, and has been said of him, as was said of one of old, that ?he was a faithful man and feared God above many.?
Mr. Bass professed religion on early life, and united with the Baptist Church, of which he was an honored member up to the time of his death. He had been afflicted with bad health for several years before he died, and his lungs were seriously affected before death came. His death was very sudden, although his friends were not expecting him to live many days.
His funeral was preached at the Baptist church of this place by Rev. J.W. Shipman Monday evening at 5 o?clock, after which his remains were followed to their last resting-place in the cemetery by a large number of sympathizing friends. Salem Register.
