From Prescriptions and Paints to Hot Lunches and Recruits
The building at 210 Genesee St. in Chittenango, known as Sharonâ??s Luncheonette, is approaching the century mark. It was built originally as a drug store and remained that for many years.
In February, 1887, a notice appeared in the local newspaper that said: â??Clark and Bassett, not satisfied with their present store and accommodations, have purchased a part of R.E. Webberâ??s lot just north of St. Paulâ??s Church are to commence at once the erection of a two-story building, the first floor to be arranged for a neat and model drug, stationery and grocery store.â?
By April of that same year H. L. Gay, the local hardware man, was putting the roof on the new structure and, before long, they moved in.
The new store owners were George C. Clark, who had come to Chittenango in 1878 and Thomas C. Bassett, another businessman. When Mr. Clark first arrived he took a position with Richard R. Walrath. Later he formed a partnership with Mr. Walrath and for a while continued in business with him. At length, Mr. Walrath sold to Thomas C. Bassett and the two built the drug store together. About 1886, Mr. Clark bought Mr. Bassett out and operated it on his own.
