Death of Hon. J.P. Bass
In the death of Mr. Bass, Maine loses another of its able and brilliant editors. He has made the Commercial a strong political paper on which his own party could depend and the general public look for reliable and up-to-date news. The Commercial of March 27th says of him:
Hon. Joseph Parker Bass, a former mayor of Bangor, owner and publisher of the Commercial for 40 years, and one of the the foremost resident of Maine, died at his home on High street at 10 o?clock, Thursday morning, at the age of 83 years, six months and three days. Death came suddenly from a clot of blood going to his heart after an operation.
The operation was performed in the early morning hours by Dr. C.A. Porter of Boston. Mr. Bass had been ill for several weeks, suffering from obstruction to the circulation in his left leg.
Mr. Bass was known and respected all over the State of Maine, as a very sagacious business man, as a newspaper publisher of high ability, fearless in backing his convictions and as a public man with the best interests of his State and his community always in his thoughts.
Surviving relatives are his nephew, Albert E. Bass, two half-brothers, J. Harris and Wales T., of Randolph, Vt., two half-sisters, Mrs. M.A. Smith of Boston, Mrs. S. Augusta Capen of Randolph, Mass., and half-nephew, Harold B. Andrews of Malden, Mass., and two half-nieces, Mrs. Harriett H. Wheeler of Boston and Mrs. Nettie Tracey of Randolph, Vt.
