    • Mrs. Mary Bass

Departed this life at her residence in Wilson county, Tennessee, on the 18th day of May, 1857, sister Mary Bass, widow of the late Sion Bass.
Sister Bass was born in North Carolina, July 23, 1789; was married to Sion Bass in 1809; made a public profession of religion in 1835 ? but as many others do, she lived out of duty until November 1837, at which time she united with the Baptist church at Little Cedar Lick, and was baptized by Elder Peter Fuqua, in which church she lived a pious and devoted member to the day of her death. When she made a profession of religion, she said her great desire was that she might be spared to see her husband and all her children become religious, and in July, 1843, she had the pleasure of seeing her husband make a public profession of religion, and was baptized into the fellowship of the same church with her. She lived to see all of her children professors of religion but one son. She was always ready for every good word and work. Liberal in her contributions to Home and Foreign Missions. In 1847 she last her husband. On the 8th of January, 1857, she was stricken with a paralytic affection, confining her to her room, and most of the time to her bed, until her death. She often said during her afflictions, that she knew her stay on earth was short, but told her children who wanted on her, to suffer no uneasiness, for she was not alarmed at death; let the summons come when it might, she had no fears; that she saw her way clear, and ?all was well.?
On the 18th of May she had the second attack of palsy, and was only able to speak two or three words. She lived some ten hours and fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, there to rest until the morning of the resurrection. She has left six children, all of whom are heads families, with many relatives and friends to mourn their loss; but they mourn not as those who have no hope. May God sanctify this dispensation to the good of all living. R.R. Barton.
