Obituary
Mr. Frederick Bassett
Following a major operation at a private hospital in Maryborough, the death occurred after a brief illness of Mr. Frederick Bsasett, of Torquay Terrace., Torquay, on February 28. His sudden passing came as a shock to his family and friends who had just left his bedside a couple of hours prior to his death.
The late Mr. Bassett was born at Rosewood, Queensland, on July 25, 1879, and with his parents he wooed the land, and prior to his marriage assisted them on their farm at Rosewood. In 1903 he married Miss Florence Coleman, at Toowoomba, and in his early married life worked in the maintenance section of the Queensland Railways.
When the Branch Creek Settlement was thrown open for settlement in 1913, deceased was successful in drawing a very large block of land. For the next few years he labored hard, blazing the track as did many of his fellow settlers who followed him.
Being an experienced dairy and agricultural farmer, he successfully engaged in that occupation at Branch Creek for 32 years and when he retired three years ago handed both farms over to his sons, Frederick and Stan.
Although living retired at Torquay, deceased made frequent visits to his sons.
At the time of his retirement to Torquay the residents of Hervey Bay commenced to build a bowling green just below his residence and with many of his fellow bowlers gave ardent and long horus of labour to establish this fine bowling green.
When the news of his passing was made known his fellow bowlers suspended play and lowered the flag to half mast. A minute?s silence was also observed.
The funeral took place from the Fort-street Baptist Church, Maryborough, for the Maryborough Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. Duffey (Torquay Baptist Church) who referred to the late Mr. Bassett as a man of character and understanding. He also made reference to his early days as a pioneer of the Branch Creek settlement. In addition to his sorrowing wife, deceased leaves a family of two sons, four daughters and 12 grandchildren to mourn his loss ? Fred and Stan (Branch Creek), Ivy (Mrs. T. Keeys, Branch Creek); Dorothy (Mrs. Don Meredith, Gurgeena); Edith (MRs. Ted Meredith, Gurgeena); Ray (Mrs. Cyril Meredith, Dundowran), Four brother and three sisters survive him. Three brothers, including Tom who paid the supreme sacrifice in World War I predeceased him.
Deceased was also a member of the Mundubbera Mason & Lodge U.G.L.O.
