Mrs. E.B. Muse, 88, Dies
Widow of Long-Time Judge
Mrs. E. B. Muse, 88, daughter of an early-day distinguished Texas lawyer, widow of a district judge and mother of a former city judge, died Saturday in the Oak Cliff house where she had lived fifty-eight years, at 505 West Twelfth.
Mrs. Muse was born in Brenham, Washington County. Her father, Ben H. Bassett, was a Virginia lawyer who moved to the new state of Texas before the War Between the States. He settled in Washington County near the capital, which was then at Washington-on-the-Brazos.
Mrs. Muse met her husband in Washington County when he was newly graduated from Baylor Law School, then located at Independence. They soon moved to Dallas. He was a district judge here for more than thirty years.
Her father also moved to Dallas and formed a law partnership. He and his partner authored Bassett & Sales Pleadings, a work well known to the legal profession.
Mrs. Muse taught at the old Oak Cliff Central School for many years, and about the turn of the century, was active in the formation of one of the first Parent-Teacher Associations in the state there. The original purpose of the association was to plant trees along the streets so that students would have shady walks to and from classes.
She was also the mother of the late Calvin Muse, who was city judge of Dallas at the time of his death. Mrs. Muse is survived by one son, Willard B. Muse; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren, all of Dallas.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Sparkman-Brand Funeral Home, 2115 Ross.
