- THE FOLLOWING IS AN DOCUMENT WRITTEN BY PITT SIMS ORIGINATING (ASSUMED) FROM MASONIC LODGE:
Member of Woodville Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 62 Woodville Tyler P.T. at a meeting Sept. 1863.
Bennett Bass and wife Melvina moved to Texas in an Ox wagon about 1852 and lived in Town Bluff on the Neches several years. Bought a farm from the Busby heirs on Thouvenin Creek 6 miles East of Woodville. Mary and Cherry were born there. Cherry died at an early age and was buried in the woods near the old Bass home. Charles Bass was born in Cuthbert, GA. Bennett Bass, Sidney and family 2 kids Jim C. Sims, Wife and one son, Ernest movd to Sipe Springs Comanchie Co about 1883 and lived there until about Dec. 1888. They moved to Tyler County and landed in old Seneca Tex. Pitt and Orvis were born in Comanchie Cou. About Jan 1, 1890 Bennet Bass and Jim C. Sims bought 177 acres of land 1 1/2 miles East of Woodville in the thicket and cleared a 40 acre farm.Lived there until 1903. Sold to A. W. Williford. Jim, Eunice, Paul, and Fred were born there. Bennett and Melvina Bass moved to Tyler County from Cuthbert Georgia as a young married couble with one son and never returned. Melvina Johnson Bass had an Aunt that moved to Texas about or at the same time they came she was Aunt Ahab Willie and Husband James Willie. They lived on the spot where the Tom C. Crews home now stands 1 1/2 miles North of Woodville on Highway 69. They lived there during the Civil War. Several families came to Texas with the Bass and Willie family. James Uriah Bass, a first cousin of Bennett Bass, was with them. J.U. Bass was a single man but married a widow with one daughter. She was Mary Ann Phillips Martin, daughter of Rev. Crawford Martin, a Baptist Minister .The daughter was Eanie Phillips and lived in this area for several years. Eanie Married Jim Bass (no relation) and raised a nice family and was last heard from about 1922 in Bosier City, LA. J.U. Bass, his wife, two sons, and a daughter are buried in Mt. Pisgah cemetary. The three children never married.
