James A. Bass, retired president of funeral home
Rock Hill - James Anderson Bass, 83, died Tuesday.
Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late J.E. and Mrs. Lillius Anderson Bass. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1927 from Furman University of Greenville and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He joined his father and brother in 1927 in the firm of J.E. Bass & Sons. In 1940 he became president of Bass Funeral Home of Rock Hill and retired in 1971.
He was a charter member and was instrumental in organizing the Oakland Baptist Church and was the first chairman of the deacon board. He was a member of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, serving as president in 1930. He served on the South Carolina Funeral Service Board from 1955 to 1958, on the board of directors of Home Funeral Savings and Loan of Rock Hill since 1954 and was named director emeritus in 1975. He was a member of the Rock Hill Kiwanis Club for more than 60 years and was a past president.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 111, where he held local offices of the lodge, being made a Master Mason in 1929, Worshipful Master in 1950 and life member in 1969. He was a High Priest of the Bratton Chapter No. 32 Royal Arch Masons; Illustrious Master of Campbell Council No. 18 RAM; Eminent Commander of Rock Hill Commandry No. 15 RAM and holds the distinction of the Knights of York Cross of Honor.
He was a Shriner, a life member of the Hejaz Temple and was the first president of the York County Shrine Club. On the state level in Masonry, he was prior of the Red Cross of Constantine of South Carolina in 1962, and was most Illustrious Grand Master of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina in 1960. He served two five-year terms on the board of the Baptist Foundation of South Carolina and as board chairman in 1968.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret “Kit” DeLoache Bass; and a son, the Reverend J. Anderson Bass Jr. of Conway.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakland Baptist Church, and burial with Masonic rites, will be in Laurelwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle M. Christian of 2531 Shiland Drive, Rock Hill, and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Bass Funeral Home of Rock Hill.
Memorial may be made to the Oakland Baptist Church building fund.

Mr. James Anderson Bass, 83
James Anderson Bass, a charter member and deacon of Oakland Baptist Church, was elected chairman of the board of deacons at the first organizational meeting of the church on July 16, 1950. He had been instrumental in organizing the church. Today, services will be held there for Mr. Bass, 83, of 5001 Little River Road, Myrtle Beach, who died Tuesday, January 3, 1989, in Grand Strand Memorial Hospital. Dr. Robert Shrum and Dr. Billy Ball will officiate at the 2 p.m. services. Burial will be in Laurelwood Cemetery with Masonic rites. Mr. Bass was born in Darlington County, son of the late J.E. and Lillius Anderson Bass. He graduated in 1927 from Furman University with a bachelor of arts degree and then from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He joined his father and brother in the firm of J.E. Bass and Sons furniture store and funeral home on September 1, 1927. In 1940, he became president of Bass Funeral Home; he retired in 1971. ''He was a good man. He had lots of friends, and if he ever did anything wrong, I didn't know it,'' said Vasco Yonce, who was a friend of Mr. Bass and a charter member at Oakland Baptist. ''He was one of the leaders in the beginning of it, and he was a deacon at Oakland for a number of years.'' Georgia Elder, a deacon at Oakland, said: ''He was elected deacon every time he was eligible. He was a very faithful member and was also on the building committee. ''He was a very quiet, distinguished man. I can remember him since I was a Winthrop student. He was a member of First Baptist Church then, and I remember him dating the Baptist Student Union directors. He was well-liked and well-respected and quiet. He wasn't one to show off or put on,'' Elder recalled. Mr. Bass was active in the community. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for more than 60 years and a Mason. He was the first president of the York County Crescent Shrine Club. ''We were real close friends,'' said Talmadge Scott Godfrey. ''I think he was inducted into the Masons in 1929.'' As a Mason, Mr. Bass was named worshipful master of Lodge 111 AFM in 1950 and in 1969 was made a life member. He was high priest of Bratton Chapter 32, Royal Arch Masons, illustrious master of Campbell Council 18, Royal Arch Masons, and eminent commander of Rock Hill Commandry 15, Royal Arch Masons. He held the Knights of York Cross of Honor, which means he held the highest office in the Blue Lodge-Chapter Council and Commandry of York County. Mr. Bass was a life member of the Hejaz Temple. Bass of Myrtle Beach, Miss Beth Bass of Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle M. Christian, 2531 Shiland Drive, after noon today. Memorials can be made to the Oakland Baptist Church building fund, 1068 West Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29730.
