      Mr. Joseph Francis Bassett

A very old native of the Kilmore district passed away peacefully at Nazareth House, South Camberwell, on August 1, in the person of Joseph Francis Bassett. He was born on Rutledge’s Survey, Kilmore, almost 90 years ago. In his heydays he was champion shearer of the district and spent part of his lifetime in N.S.W. and New Zealand. In 1888 he married Miss Ethel Hennety, at Bourke, N.S.W., and there was one one son of the union (William), Rev. Brother Ildepohonsus, of the Marist Order, now stationed at Broken Hill. For a time Mr. Bassett conducted a bakery business at Kilmore in premises now occupied by Mr. Breakell. At a later stage he conducted a store in the premises now owned by Mr. Ashton. After retiring from business he lived for some years in the north end of the town, and later was domiciled at a residence at the Marist Brothers’ College, Kilmore. A few years ago he resolved to spend his remaining years at Nazareth House, where his demise took place as stated above. The late Mr. Bassett was beloved by all whom he came in contact with. His wife predeceased him many years ago. His remains were placed besides those of his wife in the Catholic Cemetery, Kilmore, on August 2. The funeral was largely attended and at the graveside the Brothers and pupils of Assumption College formed a guard of honor. The last rites were performed by Rev. Father McHugh. Pall bearers were : Messrs Jas. Ryan, J.P., A. McManus, J.P., J. Butler, W. Butler, A Meir, W. Freyne and J. Morrissey. Coffin bearers: Messrs Fitzgerald Bros. (Strath Creek), J. Bassett and A. McDonald. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr. Barry Skehan.
