Raymond C. Bessette Dies At Age 63 After Heard Attack
Mr. Raymond C. Bessette, 63, of Fair Hope, Alabama and a former resident of Fort Covington, died Thursday, April 20th, following a heart attack.
Mr. and Mrs. Bessette had moved to Fair Hope last September following his retirement from the U.S. Customs after 26 years of service. A native of Malone, he had come to Fort Covington in 1952.
The deceased was a member of Malone National Guard Unit I Co., 105th Infantry, 27th Division. He was in service from October 1940 to march 1946 being discharged with the rank of Captain. Ray was first stationed at Fort McClelland, Alabama, and after one and one-half years he transferred to the military police and went overseas as an M.P. Service in European Theatre of Operations took him to Africa, Italy and France. He was later redeployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations at Manila.
Mr. and Mrs. Bessette had recently moved into their new home in Fair Hope and his untimely death came as a shock to their many friends in this area.
He was born April 8, 1904, the son of Mose and Louise Malette Bessette. He was a member of Malone Port of the American Legion and Malone lodge of Elks.
Testifying in a measure to the esteem in which the former local Customs man was held, a testimonial dinner was sponsored by colleagues at Dupuis Hotel, Dundee, last September4 21st and was attended by 75 friends. He had been stationed in the Customs service at Trout River before coming to Fort Covington.
Besides his wife, the former Harriet Casper of Mobile, Alabama, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Marilyn) Stevens of Malone and Jean who is a student at Pembroke College, Providence, R.I.; a son, Ray who is a student at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Also surviving are three brothers, Louis and Clarence of Malone and Edgar of Warren, Penna.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hamilton, Blanche and Gertrude, all of Malone; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Last rites were conducted Saturday, April 22nd in Fair Hope with burial in that city.
