Mr., Mrs. Bassett Parents of Son
Another William Bassett has arrived in Tarrytown. He is the son born to Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bassett of Pocantico Hills, Monday night at the Tarrytown Hospital. The new arrival has been named William Bassett after his great-grandfather the late William Bassett who with his late brother, Matthew Bassett, was long outstanding in the business life of Tarrytown.
The child’s mother is the former Miss Dorothy McFadden, a daughter of Mrs. Laura McFadden of Pocantico Hills, and the late John J. McFadden. The father is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Bassett of 21 Neperan Road, Tarrytown. The new born is the fifth Bassett to bear the name of William, the first was William Woodbury Bassett. The child’s great-grandmother is Mrs. Letitia Bassett of 21 Neperan Road who observed her eighty-ninth birthday on July 19.

William A. Bassett
William A. Bassett, of Saint Simmons Island, Georgia, passed away at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Bassett was retired from County Asphalt Inc. of Tarrytown, where he had been Vice President. Mr. Bassett was born on October 27, 1925 in Tarrytown to the late Harry L. and Mary F. Bassett. He was educated in the Tarrytown schools. Mr. Bassett served in the U.S. Army during WWII, with the 97th Infantry Division and attained the rank of staff sergeant. On April 25, 1945, he was awarded the Bronze star medal for meritorious achievement in volunteering to accompany a patrol of infrantrymen and medical personnel sent to evacuate six men of his platoon, who had been killed or wounded by an enemy ambush. He was also the first WWII veteran to be appointed to the Executive committee of the Westchester County American Legion and later served as Vice Commander of the legion. On September 30, 1950, he married Dorothy McFadden at the Church of the Magdalene in Pocantico Hills. Prior to moving to Georgia, Mr. Bassett had lived in Briarcliff Manor since 1959. Locally, Mr. Bassett was active in numerous organizations that included the Tarrytown and Pocantico Hills Fire Department. In the Village of Briarcliff Manor, he was a longtime member of the special police force and served on the Village Planning Board. He was also a founder and former President of the Chilmark Country Club and former member of the Board of Governor's of Sleepy Hollow County Club. For many years, Mr. Bassett was active in numerous organizations in the Construction industry throughout the Hudson Valley. He was a founder and first Chairman of the Board of the Construction Industry Council of Westchester and the Hudson Valley. He was also Chairman of the CIC PAC and Co-Chairman of the Joint Labor/Management committee of the Hudson Valley. He was also a past president of the Associated Contractors of Westchester and the Hudson Valley Contractors Suppliers Association. He also served as a trustee of the Health and welfare and pension funds for Teamsters Local 445. He is survived by his five children: William A. Bassett of Briarcliff Manor and his wife Christine. Thomas M. Bassett of Wellington, Florida and his wife Marcie. Michael J. of Ossining and his wife Debbie, John T. of Bronxville and his partner Alan and Diane of Briarcliff Manor. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: William A. III, Meghan, Lindsay, Kimberly, Michael Jr., Jeffrey and Laura. He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, who passed away on December 31, 2000. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Waterbury and Kelly Funeral Home at 1300 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor on Thursday. Funeral Mass will be on Friday, December 2, at 10 a.m., at the Church of the Magdalene in Pocantico Hills. Interment to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
