      Peggy Strickland Marries Mr. Bass
      Rocky Mount, October 2 - The marriage of Miss Peggy Elizabeth Strickland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Strickland of Rocky Mount, to Hillman Dempsey Bass, son of Mrs. L.D. Bass and the late Mr. Bass of Rocky Mount, took place in a formal ceremony which was solemnized Sunday afternoon, September 2, in the Thorpe Memorial Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church. The officiating minister was Reverend Norman Johnson, and music was presented by Mrs. Lyman Jones, organist, and Miss Hilda Winstead of Raleigh, soloist.
      The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of ivory satin and carried a bouquet centered with a purple-throated orchid.
      Maid of honor was Miss Effie Louise Vines of Washington, who wore a gown of yellow taffeta. The bridegroom’s sisters, Mrs. James Hart of Morganton, wearing orchid taffeta, was matron of honor. The bridesmaid was Miss Lois James of Washington and Rocky Mount, who wore lime taffeta. Miss Julie Anne Strickland and Miss Ann Stone of Charlotte, also gowned in lime taffeta, were junior bridesmaids.
      Honorary bridesmaids were Miss Grace Duke, Miss Betty Anne Cross, Miss Christine Duke and Miss Audrey Griffin. Best man was Joseph B. Bass of Greenville, a brother of the bridegroom.
      After the ceremony, the parents of the bride entertained at a reception at the home of Mrs. Harold Browder. Later the couple left for a wedding trip, and the bride wore a pink suit with brown accessories.

      Peggy Strickland Bass, 77
      Rocky Mount - Peggy Strickland Bass, 77, passed away peacefully in her sleep January 13, 2007. She was born March 5, 1929 in Nash County, daughter of the late Bernard and Julia Dew Strickland. She is preceded in death by her husband Hillman Dempsey Bass. Peggy graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School, Class of 1947, and attended New York University. Peggy was very active in the church for over 30 years, in the adult church choir, children choir director, Sunday School teacher and the General Chairperson of the Baptist WMU. She enjoyed being involved in her community while living in Scotland Neck, Weldon and Rocky Mount. President of the Henderson Junior Womans Club, the Credit Womans Club, Roanoke Arts Council, and the Scotland Neck Jr. Women's Club, and served on the Scotland Neck Hospital Auxiliary Board. Member of the American Red Cross and was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. In Rocky Mount, a past President and Committee Chairperson for the Ways and Means Committee of the Rocky Mount Altrusa Club and involved in the Eaglewood Garden Club. Peggy was also a society reporter for the Henderson Dispatch. After this, she started and ran her own dance studio, known as the Peggy Bass School of Dance, that she ran for eighteen years. She is survived by two children; one son, Denny, and his wife, Jan Bass of Wilmington, North Carolina; and one daughter Robin, and her husband, Brad Henderson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; six grandchildren; Hillman, Hinton and Harrison, Kendall, Lindsey and Grayson. She has a sister Julia, and her husband, Eddie Dawley of Columba, Mississippi. She wanted to be remembered as someone who loved her family and friends. She was dedicated and a true motivator of people. She was always content with everything that God had blessed her with during her life and passed this quality on to her family. She was a classic southern lady who will be greatly missed by all who came to know her. Visitation will be Sunday, January 14, 2006 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 15, 2007 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Grisham officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of Hospice of Nash General, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27804 or the First Baptist Church, 200 South Church Street, Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27803.
