Resided in Buncombe County where he enlisted at age 22, May 20, 1861 for the war. Mustered in as Sergeant and reduced to ranks December 1, 1862. Transferred to Company F, 5th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry upon appointment as 2nd Lieutenant in March 1863.
