- H.W. Brodie Electrocuted
Accidentally Killed When Testing Lines
A terrible accident happened in the city at about five o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, when Hugh H. Brodie, electrician for the city was electrocuted. He was testing some wires on a pole on Pearce street east, when it is supposed he slipped, and his foot coming in contact with the ground wire, instantaneously 2300 volts passed through his body. As soon as he was noticed lying limply over a cross arm, the alarm was given and the machinery at the power house stopped. He was taken down with all possible speed, and an effort was made to restore him. His hands were terribly burned, two of the fingers of the left hand being nearly burned off.
An inquest was held on Wednesday eveneing at 7:30, by Coroner Robertson who empaneled the following jury: H.C. McLean, foreman, and Messrs, H.J. Montgomery, L.D. Montgomery, Geo. D. Wallace, C.D. Smith and A.T. O'Connor. After examining a number of witnesses, they brought in a verdict "That H.W. Brodie met his death accidentally while following his employment".
Mr. Brodie was one of the most popular men in the city, and was a most obligating official. He arrived in the city about eight years ago with his family, but after working in the power house for a short time he resigned to accept a situation as engineer in the collieries of the C.P.R. at Bankhead, which position he held until this spring when he returned to the city to be with his wife and family. Upon the resignation of Jas. Henderson as lineman of the city, the deceased was engaged to become his successor.
Deceased was 38 years of age, and leaves a wife and family of seven children to mourn the loss of a loving husband and affectionate father.
The funeral takes place from the residence tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock, the interment being in the Wetaskiwin cemetery. As a mark of respect of the departed, it has been ordered that the flag at city hall shall fly at half mast.
The accident was a shock to the community, and the bereaved family have the deepest sympathy of everyone in their irreparable loss.
