    • I came across several postings this morning where researchers had the first name Celia for Augustine Sledge's wife but not her maiden name. I'll post source documents below:

      Augustine Sledge's wife was Celia Bass, daughter of Arthur Bass and Agnes Morris. Agnes was first married to Samuel Alsobrook and upon Samuel's death she married Arthur Bass. Celia in some documents was spelled Sealey. Arthur Bass was the son of Charles Bass of Southampton Co. and Agnes the daughter of Thomas Morris and wife Boyce of Brunswick Co. VA.

      Sussex Co. VA:
      Deed Book G p.480-(118) ARTHUR (x) BASS & his wife AGNESS (x) to LEWIS THORP. 19 Dec 1787. 56 acres which John Alsobrook sold to sd Lewis Thorp & which had been laid off for the sd Agness Bass who was the widow of Samuel Alsobrook (father of the sd John Alsobrook). (witnesses omitted)

      Know all persons by their ordered ito this day is a Deed of Gift, that we Arthur Bass of Greensville Co. VA and Agnes Bass my wife do give unto Augustine Sledge our son in law of Sussex Co. one negro named Peg that Thomas Morris our father, gave unto us in our possession in the year one thousand, seven hundred and seventy-six in January or February. We give this said negro by the name of Peg to the said Augustine Sledge our son in law and all her increase and also all their increase to said Augustine Sledge to him and his heirs forever. Our wish and desire is that our son in law Augustine Sledge after being satisfied for the services he rendered unto us in our lifetime should make as equal a division as he possibly can amongst our children namely SEALEY SLEDGE, Sarah Bass, Thomas Bass, Boicey Buckley, Lucy Kooksey, Elizabeth Barnes and Frances Bass. Where unto we set our hands and seals this the fifth day of February, Eighteen Hundred and Five.

      Whereas,Arthur Bass and Agnes his wife, by a certain Deed of Gift bearing date the Fifth day of February, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Five, which said deed was fully acknowledged in the County Court of Greensville did convey to Augustine Sledge of the County of Sussex for the(?) of himself and the children of said Arthur Bass, a negro woman named Peg and all her increase together with all their personal estate. Now know ye that I Augustine Sledge, and we the undersigned children of Arthur Bass do by these presents convey the aforesaid negro Peg with all her increase together with the personal estate to the aforesaid Arthur Bass and Agnes his wife, hereby removing and forever disclaiming all right, title, interest whatsoever in the above mentioned property intended to be conveyed by this Deed of Gift aforesaid to us, or our heirs.In witness whereof the said Augustine Sledge and we the said children of Arthur Bass have hereunto set our hands and seals this the first day of September 1807.

      Greensville February Court 1807. This conveyance from Augustine Sledge and others, to Arthur Bass and wife was proved by the oaths of W. W. Wilkins and Edmunds Mason, except Selah Sledge and proved as to her mark by Harman Bailey and ordered to be recorded.

      That whereas there is a suit now defending in the Richmond Chancery District Court where Thomas Bass complainant and us defendants for and concerning the Title of a negro Peg and her children, which said negro and her increase was directed to the said Thomas by his Grandfather Thomas Morris after the death of Agnes Bass as will more fully appear by the said will recorded in Greensville County Court and whereas the said defendants are desirous of putting an end to all litigation and contention in the said suit. We the said defendants are conscious that the above mentioned negros, after the death of the said Agnes Bass, are really the property of the said Thomas Bass complainant and we do hereby for ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, relinguish all right, title and claim which we now have or may hereafter have to the above mentioned slaves, to the said Thomas Bass.And, it is further agreed between the parties that the said Thomas Bass is to pay all the costs of the said suit in Chancery whenever the same may be heard and determined given under our hands and seals this First day of September 1806.

      My vestment in the above documents are through John Barnes and wife Elizabeth Bass, dau. also of Arthur Bass and Agnes Morris. John Barnes a brother to my second great grandmother Lizza (Elizabeth) Barnes that married Henry Mason 1816 Greensville Co. VA. John and Lizza were children of John Barnes and Susanna Blanks of Greensville. Henry Mason son of Christopher Mason and Sarah Chappell of Brunswick Co.
