      May 9, 1942 - November 4, 2010
Upperville, Virginia - Dobbie Bassett, 68, died Thursday night at her home after a long illness.
Ms. Bassett was born in Miami, Oklahoma to George L. and Elizabeth Fullerton Coleman in 1942. Her family moved to Pebble Beach, California a few years later because of her father's love of golf. Dobbie began riding horses as a very young child and was a consummate horsewoman from the start. She competed nationally from a young age, under the expert eye of the renowned horse trainer Richard (Dick) Collins. She won blue ribbons on her horse Fancy Free throughout her entire childhood. Her striving for perfection and her competitive spirit, later served her well when showing and winnng with her beloved Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
Her education included Santa Catalina School for Girls in Monterey, California and then onto Garrison Forrest in Maryland. She attended finishing school in Switzerland, where she learned to speak French fluently, and then went to Florence, Italy to study art history. Moving to New York City at age 20, Dobbie studied interior design and fashion, and developed her innate sense of style and flair, which would be one of her trademarks throughout her life.
Dobbie's passion was her animals - specifically horses and dogs. Through her young daughter, Caroline's Corgi, Gwendolyn, she fell in love with the breed. She moved to Middleburg, Virginia in 1983 where she could live out her dream of fox hunting in the beautiful Virginia Piedmont, and continue breeding and showing Cardigans. She focused her creative energy in breeding championship lines of this wonderful breed and made an enormous contribution to the Corgi world.
She had two marriages. She was married to Theodore S. Bassett and they had one daughter, Caroline. Her second marriage was to Pierre de Segur in Paris, France, a city very dear to her heart.
She had many friends from all walks of life. Dobbie Coleman Bassett de Segur will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her only daughter, Caroline E. Bassett, who resides in New York City and sister, Sarah Coleman Cecconi, a long-time resident of Pebble Beach.
