      Dr. Bassett N. Bailey will celebrate his 80th birthday Thursday, June 20. Dr. Bailey is the dean of Mannsville business men, having been a practicing dentist in that village for a period of over 57 years. He studied dentistry with Dr. E.E. DuMon of Mannsville, after which he went into partnership with Dr. Fayette Maynard. At the death of Dr. Maynard in 1872, Dr. Bailey opened an office for himself over David Wheeler?s bookstore in Railroad street. His office is now located at his residence on Railroad street.
      Dr. Bailey has always been public spirited. For many years he was identified with the village board and the board of education and has been president of the Parent Teacher Association. He has also been an official of the Congregational church for years. He has been president of Jefferson county board of underwriters and vice-president of the Jefferson county dental society.
      Dr. Bailey became a member of Mannsville Lodge, No. 175, I.O.O. F., September 2, 1871, and has been affiliated with that lodge for 58 years. He has held the office of Noble Grand for five terms and has been presented a Past Grand?s collar by the lodge. He is past chief patriarch of Oriental encampment, which he joined in Sandy Creek. Dr. Bailey has the distinction of being the oldest known Odd Fellow in Northern New York.
      Among Dr. Bailey?s treasures is a very large powder horn which was carried by his great grandfather in the Revolutionary War. On it is engraved ?Seth Bassett for Liberty, His Horn, Roxbury Camps, Made February 24, 1776.? There is also engraved a picture of the camp and one of a rooster. The morning before the battle a rooster flew upon a post and crowed. Mr. Bassett predicted that it was an omen that they would win the battle, which they did.
      A soapstone inkwell, black with age, is engraved ?Seth Bassett, his ink pot, made in the year A.D. 1758.?
      There were three Seth Bassetts, the third, Seth M. Bassett, brothers of Dr. Bailey?s mother, conducted a commercial college in Syracuse, 1854 to 1860. He made a ten dollar bill on the Jefferson County Bank with a pen. As the state fair was held in Watertown that year, he entered it with other drawings. To see what the officials of the bank would say, he took the penned bill from the frame and asked for change. After looking it over the cashier said ?certainly?. Mr. Bassett then told him that he had made the bill with a pen. The drawing was sold at auction for $250 after Mr. Bassett?s death, which occurred at the age of 25 from over work. He was one of three brothers, all find musicians. Noble P. Bassett was professor of mathematics and also taught music in the college.
      In a catalog of the college, 1858, is a list of graduates, among them the following: W. Larrent Wheeler, Mannsville; Henry W. Shepard, Mannsville; George F. Paddock, bookkeeper in Black River Bank, Watertown; G.W. Gennett, J.W. McMullen, J.A. Munson, Miss L.E. McFarland, G. P. Smith and others of Watertown.

      MANNSVILLE ? Dr. Bassett N. Bailey, 91, whose death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Van Auken, at Hawthorne, N.J. on Thursday, Oct 3, 1940 was the oldest known Odd Fellow in the North Country, he having joined Mannsville Lodge No. 175 Sept. 2, 1871. He had 69 years to his credit as belonging to that organization.
      Dr. Bailey was born in Volney, His father was Nathan Bailey and his mother?s maiden name was Bassett. He was a great grandson of Seth Bassett, a patriot who fought in the American Revolution.
      After studying dentistry with Dr. E.E. DuMon of Mannnsville, he went into partnership with Dr. Fayette Maynard. At the death of Dr. Maynard in 1872, Dr. Bailey opened an office for himself. He practiced dentistry in Mannsville for over 60 years, retiring in March, 1934 after which he spent much of his time with his daughter. He was married to Miss Isabelle Baker of Mannsville how died many years ago. Dr. Bailey was for many years clerk of the Board of Education of Mannsville Union school and was president of the Parent Teacher Association. At one time, he belonged to Mannsville Congregational church of which he had been an official for many years.
      He served as president of the Jefferson County Board of Underwriters and vice president of the Jefferson County Dental Society, and had been a notary public over a long period. He was a member of Mannsville Citizens club, Inc.
      The body was brought to his home in Mannsville Sunday. A prayer at the home was given by Rev. B.F. Hurlburt a former pastor. The Odd Fellows service was held at the grave in Maplewood Cemetery. The committal was given by Rev. Joseph Kerr, pastor of Mannsville Congregational church. Dr. Bailey is survived by his daughter and one grandson, Frank Van Auken.
