      August 4, 1927 ? October 16. 2017 (age 90)

Dick Marvin Bassett, 90, was surrounded by family when he passed away on October 16, 2017 at his home in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He was born on August 4, 1927 in Kane, Wyoming to Harvey and Alta Bassett, and grew up in Lovell Wyoming. Dick was 17 years old when he joined the Navy, with the expectation of serving for the duration of the war. With a twinkle in his eye, Dick would say that the Japanese heard he was coming and quickly surrendered. Dick returned to Lovell in 1946 and worked on the family farm for two years while attending night school at the University of Wyoming satellite campus in Powell. During this time he also enjoyed playing the piano in local dance bands.

He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Northern California and Oregon from 1948-1950. He then studied agronomy at Brigham Young University, and graduated in 1953. Dick was awarded a Fellowship to continue his studies at Rutgers University, and received his PhD in 1956. While in New Jersey, Dick convinced Leonore Crowther to leave her home in Malad, Idaho to come and "type his dissertation." She said yes, and they were married in the Logan Temple on August 3, 1954.

In 1956, Dick and Leonore moved to Shafter, California where he began his 44 year career as a cotton researcher for the University of California-Davis. Dick was well known throughout the industry for his outstanding contributions to the development of premium cotton varieties, which were in high demand world-wide. He was well respected for his dedication, and honored for his integrity.

Dick served in his local church congregation as a devoted Home Teacher, Branch President, Sunday School President, High Priest Group Leader, Young Men's President, and Stake High Counselor. His unconditional love and desire to serve others allowed him to be a great source of help and strength to many. No task was too great or too simple in the service of another.

He had a passion for this great country. He felt a particular claim to the rich agriculture of the San Joaquin Valley in California, the Big Horn mountains of Wyoming and the beautiful Timpanogos mountain range outside his front door. Dick was an avid hiker up until his 90th birthday.

Dick and Leonore were married for 48 years, and they had four children. He was anxious to be reunited with Leonore, his daughter Yvonne Garzola, and his grandson Tyler Bassett. Dick is also preceded in death by his brothers Jack, Bob, and Gilmer Bassett. He is survived by his brother Bill Bassett of Spokane, Washington, his children Alyce (Walt) Sangster of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Craig (Debbie) Bassett of San Antonio, Texas, Diane (John) Read of Alexandria, Virginia, 13 grandchildren and soon-to-be 11 great-grandchildren.
