    • Many Bass histories list Charles as a son of Richard Bass, but the years just don't seem to work out correctly. I am leaving him here for documentation purposes pending new research.


      SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY VIRGINIA
      WILL OF CHARLES BASS 1780

      IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Charles Bass of the County of Southampton being sick and weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, thanks be to Almighty God for the same, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the following manner, Viz:

      Imprimis. After my Funeral expenses are defrayed and just debts paid I dispose of my wordly goods both real and personal which it hath pleased Almighty God of his Mercy and goodness to bestow on me as follows (to wit).

      Item. I give & bequeath to my son Henry Bass and to his heirs forever all the part of my land lying on the south side of the Road leading from Southampton Courthouse to Hicks Ford containing as is esteemed two hundred acres, be the same more or less.

      Item. I lend unto my son Hardiman Bass during his natural life a part of land bounded as follows, to wit: beginning at the main Run of the Three Creeks where the dividing line between Jeremiah Thorp and myself strikes the sd. Creek, thence up the said Creek to the mouth of the Beaver pond from thence down a Run which runs through the low grounds call'd the back run to within one hundred yards of the sd. Jeremiah Thorpe line aforesiad, thence a straight course to two noted pines which lies down, lately fell asunder within a few steps of the Meadow Branch, thence to the Meadow Branch and up the same to the Meadow from thence a straight line to the corner tree of the sd. Jeremiah Thorps land near the sd. Meadow then down the sd. Jeremiah Thorp's to the beginning, imagined to be one hundred acres be the same more or less, provided my sd. son Hardiman Bass should depart this life before the death of his wife Ann Bass then I lend the sd. land to the sd. Ann Bass during her widowhood, I give & bequeath to my Grandson Roger Bass and to heirs forever the last mentioned parcel of land of one hundred acres after the incumbrances above is removed.

      Item. I give & bequeath to my neighbor Moses Thorp twelve acres of my land to him the sd. Thorpe and to his heirs forever beginning where the line which divides the sd. Thorp's land from mine strikes a Run call'd the back run of the Three Creeks, thence down the sd. back run until opposite to the corner of my old field, thence to a Poplar standing in the Hedgerow near the cartway between the sd. Thorp's house and my house, thence to a Branch which divides the sd. Thorp's land and mine and down the sd. branch to the beginning.

      Item. I lend unto my son Charles Bass during his natural life the remaining part of my land which I imagine is one hundred and fifty acres and shou'd my sd. son Charles depart this Life before his wife dies then I give the use of the sd. last parcel of land to my sd. son Charles's wife Ann Bass during her widowhood.

      Item. I give to my Grandson Edwin Bass and his heirs forever the sd. parcel of land which I have given his father Charles Bass the use of during Natural Life & his mother during her widowhood (as the case may be) after the two incumbrances are at an end, but shou'd the sd. Edwin depart this Life before the sd. two incumbrances are removed then I give the sd. parcel of land to his Brother Dixon Bass and to his heirs forever, but shou'd the sd. Dixon likewise die under the same situation and circumstances, then on the sd. terms I give to his Brother Howell Bass the sd. parcel of land last mentioned to him the sd. Howell Bass and to his heris forever.

      Item. I give to my Grandson Dixon Bass my midling sized Pott and Hoods.

      Item. My will and desire is, that my Burial place belonging to the parcel of land I have lent to my son Charles Bass to the bigness of fifteen years square shall be reserv'd for a family buryal place and I do not give the sd. burial place to any person whatsover, notwithstanding the before bequests.

      Item. My Will is that all the remainder part of my Estate in whatsover manner it lyeth or may be found (except a Quarter of Beef Moses Thorp owes me which I give to my son Charles & cloth for bedticking & boulster which sd. Moses Throp owes me which I give to my daughter Mary Matthews) shall be sold tot he highest bidder for ready money and the money arrising from the sd. sale to be equally divided between my sons Arthur Bass, Newit Bass, my daughter Mary Matthews & my Grandson Jordan Bass son of my Daughter Tabitha Bass.

      Item. I do nominate & appoint my sons Henry Bass & Charles Bass & my son i law Arthur Matthews my whole & sole Excrs. of this my last Will & Testament. In witness whereof I do hereby set my hand & affix my seal this Eleventh day of September 1780.
