Jane Rae Bassitt Winters
Janet Rae Bassitt Winters, 74, passed away at her home in Austin, Texas, on July 28, 2014. Janet was born in Lima, Ohio, on September 20, 1939, to Donald Raymond and Alice Wiley Bassitt. She was a 1957 graduate of LaFayette Jackson High School. After high school Jan worked for the United Telephone Company in Lima Ohio. In June of 1958 Janet married Thomas F Winters of Omaha Nebraska. He preceded her in death on February 5, 2001. Janet and Tom moved to Elgin, Texas and owned and operated a restaurant for several years. She was also preceded in death by one daughter Peggy and a foster daughter, Becky Bernard. She was also preceded in death by one sister Joyce McClain of Beverdam Ohio. Jan is survived by one foster son, Kurt (Beatriz) Dillard and two Grandchildren, Ariana and Federico who reside in Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by three grandsons from Elgin Texas, James Bernard, Jason Bernard and Cody Bernard. She is survived by her siblings Judy (Bruce) Taylor of Wapakoneta Ohio, Jon (Glenda) Bassitt of Lima Ohio, Jackie (Tony) Draper of Forest Ohio, Jean (Brent) Rankin of Lima Ohio and Jim (Faye) Bassitt of Lima Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
In the past several years before her death she worked as a chef. One of her greatest past times was sewing and making beautiful quilts and embroidery decor. Her most enjoyable past time was shopping thrift shops and finding unbelievable bargains. She never knew a stranger and loved cooking. Her knowledge of so many things was quite impressive. She will be greatly missed by not only her family but by all that knew her. A special thank you to Bobbie Gize and Pat Price, both of Austin, for their friendship and assistance. Janet's wishes were to be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, Austin.
