      Earl F. Bassett dies; member of E. Greenwich school board

      Earl Francis Bassett, 77, of Harwood Road, a member of the East Greenwich School Committee for 12 years and an Air Force career serviceman who was held as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II, died Saturday at South County Hospital, Wakefield. He was the husband of Ruby K. (Jacques) Bassett.

      Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Earl W. and Maude F. (Tinning) Bassett, he moved to East Greenwich in 1973.

      Mr. Bassett enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1942 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1943, serving as a navigator. He was shot down in May of 1944 on his 26th mission over Germany, flying for the 8th Air Force. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for one year.

      He was project manager for the housing project at Travis Air Force Base in California from 1959 to 1963, and chief of procurement at the RAF Wetherfield in Essex, England, from 1963 to 1966. From 1970 to 1972 he was chief of the subsistence division, Defense Personnel Support Center, in Philadelphia, managing the purchasing of food for all branches of the armed forces. He received the Armed Forces Commendation Medal in 1972.

      From 1976 to 1978 he was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross, and was chairman of disaster preparedness, central chapter. He was an allocation panel member of the United Way of Southeastern New England. Since 1980 he was a member of the Republican State Central Committee, and president of its executive committee since 1986. From 1984 to 1986 he was chairman of the East Greenwich Republican Town Committee.

      He was a member of Rob Morris Masonic Lodge 92 of Denver, Colo.; the 392nd Bomb Group Association; the 2nd Air Division Association, the Caterpillar Club, East Greenwich Kentish Guards, Reserve Officers Association, Retired Officers Association, Fairlawn American Legion Post, and East Greenwich Firemen's Association.

      Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Kay L. Todd of Denver, Colo., and Noel E. Bassett of Pawtucket; and two grandchildren.

      A requiem eucharist will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Peirce Street. Burial will be private.
