      LEONMINSTER - Harold L. Bassett, 81, of 44 Hall St. Leominster, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Bedford Veterans Hospital, Bedford. Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., Leominster, is directing arrangements.

      LEOMINSTER - Harold L. Bassett Jr., 81, of 44 Hall St., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Bedford.
      He was born in Leominster, the son of Harold L. and Helen J. (Grady) Bassett Sr. He graduated in 1943 from Leominster High School and in 1949 from Worcester Boys Trade School.
      Mr. Bassett was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and Korea. During World War II, he served as a Radioman 2 Class aboard Cruiser USS Bilox in the Western Pacific. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Combat Stars, the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, Japan; the World War II Victory Medal, and the National Defense Medal. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, serving aboard destroyer escort USS Fessenden, in the Atlantic.
      He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Joanettes All Girl Drum and Bugle Corps and J's Management.
      Mr. Bassett is survived by four daughters, Deborah Gilbert and her longtime companion, Craig Mondeau of Orange; Lynn Sarao, Jean Ricci and her husband, Michael and Joan Maillett and her husband, Brian all of Leominster; nine grandchildren, CarrieAnn Sarao, Karen Sarao, Dawn Nicoll, Kristopher Nicoll, Michael Gilbert, Jennifer Leger, Alissa Leger, Christ Mullan and her husband Christopher, and Wiiliam Coulter; two great-grandchildern, Zackerie Camerie and Lucas Gilbert; two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet L. (Kingsbury) Bassett in 1985; a son, Michael Bassett; a daughter, Pamela Bassett; and a sister, Marion Steele.

      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edith Nourse Roger Memorial, Veterans Administration, Alzheimers Unit , Therapeutic Activity Center Program, Unit 62, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730.
