Joan Bassett Procopio
COLUMBIA - Joan Bassett Procopio, 61, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed peacefully as she slept on March 17th, 2005, returning home to God's loving embrace. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 4th, 1944, she is survived by her sons, Robert Jr., Vincent, and Michael; daughter, Deborah Finan and her husband John, along with grandaughters, Abigail and Katherine; brothers, John and Richard Bassett of Cleveland, and sister, Barbara Aker of North Olmsted, Ohio. Her parents, Roy and Ruth Bassett, also of Cleveland, preceded her in passing. Joan graduated from West Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and went on to attend Cleveland Institute of Art. Thereafter, she married Robert A. Procopio and worked as a commercial artist for Reuben H. Donnelly company creating yellow pages advertisements in Cleveland, New York and then Pittsburgh in addition to being an active Avon cosmetics representative, all while raising four children... a truly incredible feat. She was the most patient and loving mother any child could be blessed with, and with her warm smiles and gentle hugs always reassured us that everything was going to be all right. In later years, she was active as a volunteer in South Carolina, being named Volunteer of the Year for various state programs as well as speaking at special engagements. Truly a woman of many talents, she was most gifted as an artist, her specialties in painting with oils, acrylics and water colors and sketching with charcoal, not to mention being a superb cook and handy with thread and needle. Joan was also an excellent gardener with a true green thumb, and always had the most beautiful, vibrant gardens, with tulips of all colors her favorite. Around the holiday season, she had a knack for decorating and loved spending Christmas with her family, whom she loved dearly. Mama, we love you and miss you so much, and know that you are the most beautiful angel in Heaven, painting sunsets and rainbows with wonderful colors for us all to gaze up and wonder at. You are home now, Mam, with God looking after His most special daughter the way you looked after all of us. Sweet dreams, Mama. Private services held at Mitchell Funeral Home on Friday, March 25th, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
