WWII Army veteran
WINCHENDON -- E. Richard Bassette, 78, of 51A Hyde Park Drive, died Wednesday, February 20, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after an illness.
He was born in Winchendon, the son of Edward and Mary (Silverburg) Bassette, and had later lived 16 years in Rindge, New Hampshire, before returning to Winchendon two years ago.
Mr. Bassette was a meter engineer at the former Fitchburg Paper Company in West Fitchburg for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He then worked for M.H. Parks Co. in Winchendon.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Bassette was a member of the American Legion, Eugene M. Connor Post 193.
He leaves a son, Richard E. Bassette of Danbury, Connecticut; nephews and nieces.
His wife of 52 years, Gloria H. "Barnie" (Loomis) Bassette, died on May 15, 2000.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in the spring.

WINCHENDON -- E. Richard Bassette, 78, of 51A Hyde Park Drive, a World War II veteran, died Wednesday, February 20, in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after an illness.
His wife of 52 years, Gloria H. “Barnie” (Loomis) Bassette, died in 2000. He leaves a son, Richard E. Bassette, of Danbury, Connecticut; nieces and nephews. He was born in Winchendon, son of Edward and Mary (Silverburg) Bassette, and had lived in Rindge, New Hampshire for 16 years before returning to Winchendon two years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Donations may be made to the Winchendon EMT Ambulance Fund, PO Box 125, Winchendon, Massachusetts 01475. The Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central Street, is directing arrangements.
