Submitted by Anna Le Libunao, daughter.
Reverend John C. Bassett was born on July 18, 1922, in Smith Mills, Kentucky. He was the son of John L. and Mona Lee Moore Bassett, both deceased.
John married Lora Bolt on July 25, 1942, and she survives. They would have been married 60 years on July 25, 2002. Lora was a great asset to John throughout his ministry. He was a 1940 graduate of Evansville Bosse High School and a 1943 graduate of Lindsey Wilson College. He was also a 1946 graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, and received his Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University in 1949. He lent financial support to many of the above mentioned institutions of higher learning, since he was an alumni. Reverend John C. Bassett pastored the following United Methodist Churches, primarily in Kentucky: Gradyville, Helena - Nepton, Campton - Hazel Green; Gallaton and Joelton, Tennessee; Lewisport, Owensboro, Cadiz, Providence, Morganfield, Highlan, Audubon Park, Parkview, Wesleyan Heights, and St. Makrs. He concluded his ministry as Superintendent of the Louisville North District.
He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Methodist Home of Kentucky, Lindsey Wilson College, the University of Louisville Wesley Foundation and the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles, Indiana. In 1990 Rev. Bassett retired from the ministry. He retired one year early to take care of his wife, Lora. She had two strokes in 1988. After retirement, Lora and John moved to Versailles, Indiana to be near family. In 1993, Lora had to be moved to a health care facility, due to complications from diabetes. At the age of 79, John C. Bassett passed away in his home in Versailles, on April 20, 2002. He died of a massive heart attack. He had three heart attacks in January of 2001.
His wife, Lora, survives. Other survivors include one son, Ronald Bassett of St. Petersburg, Florida; two daughters, Rita N. Hartwell of Moore's Hill, Indiana, and Ann Lee Libunao of Versailles, Indiana; one brother, Gene Bassett of Evansville, Indiana; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles, Indiana, on April 24, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Michael Hendrix, Reverend Walter Williams, Reverend Les Chapman, and Reverend Glen Sowards officiating.
Graveside Services were held Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Cemetery near Liberty, Kentucky.
Reverend John C. Bassett devoted his life to God, church and family. When his wife, Lora, was in the Menderly Health Care Center, many felt that he continued his ministry there by bringing a ray of sunshine and hope to those who had no family or friends to support them. He faithfully, once or twice a day, visited Lora. John was very devoted to her care and well-being. He was always more concerned about others than himself. Reverend Bassett will be missed a lot by all of those who knew him. Now he is in Heaven where he will not have any more pain, suffering or sorrow; he is now at peace. We have the assurance that we will join him some day. What a day that will be!
Dad's devotion to our Mom meant a lot to all of us children. In the last few years of his life, he would go to stay with mom, often when he was not physically able to do so. Mom was not able to feed herself or take care of herself in many other ways, therefore Dad felt he or one of us children had to be with her, especially at mealtime. He was so concerned that she would not be taken care of properly. The night before he passed away, he was with Mom until 9:00 p.m. It was unusual for him to stay so late, but he just wanted to be with her as long as he could. We were richly blessed to have had a father who was truly loved and was devoted to his wife, our mother.
