Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bassett, 70, surrounded by her loving family and her beloved friends, Sr. Stella Marie Dillon and Father Richard Shaw, entered into eternal life on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Emmett and Rita "Dolly" Rourke Grogan. Betty grew up on 8th Street in Troy and graduated from Catholic Central High School, Class of 1956. She had been employed for a few years by the New York Telephone Company in Menands and Oneonta. She married Donald Bassett, her husband of over 51 years on November 30, 1957. Mrs. Bassettt retired from the Shenendehowa Central Schools where she worked as a teaching assistant for over 30 years. During her tenure, she worked with many children of special needs. A devoted Catholic she was also a kind hearted, wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, attending all of her children's sporting events. She enjoyed working, baking, reading, following current events, traveling to Florida and rising early in the morning to enjoy their morning walks and Pepsi. She loved spending time with friends and her family. She was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park. Betty was a dedicated fan of the basketball and football teams at C.C.H.S. while her husband coached there. She loved Christmas, especially shopping for her children and grandchildren. Betty also loved hostessing pool parties in her backyard during the summer months and was proud of her Irish heritage. Beloved wife of over 51 years to Donald Bassett of Halfmoon; devoted mother of Michael (Joyce) Bassett of Clifton Park, Matthew (Tracy) Bassett of Syracuse, John (Jean) Bassett of Menands, Brian (Tina) Bassett of Panama City, Fla. and Susan (Roland) Graves of Slingerlands; loving sister of Kay (Joe) Stallmer of Clifton Park, Rita (Dave) Duncan of Brunswick and the late Sr. Gail Grogan; cherished grandmother of Sarah, Halie, Amanda, Elena, Justin, Taylor, John and Emmett Bassettt and Roland, Lauren and Marygrace Graves, also survived by several nieces and nephews. Betty's family would like to offer their special thanks to the staff of St. Peter's Hospital, the Community Hospice Inn as well as to Bishop Howard Hubbard, Father John Tallman, Father Pat Butler, Father Richard Shaw and Sister Stella Dillon. Relatives and friends are invited to visitation hours on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Rd., Clifton Park, NY 12065. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Church, Clifton Park. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford, following Betty's Mass of Christian Burial. The family desires, that in lieu of flowers that a memorial contribution be made to the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, 315 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208 or to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211, in memory of Betty Bassett. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, Clifton Park, NY 12065. 518-371-5454.
