Albert W. Bassett
Albert W. Bassett, 61, of Santa Ana died Jan. 22 of natural causes. Services
held at Waverley Church, Santa Ana. Survivors: sons, Thomas, Samuel;
daughters, Catherine Kieffer, Elizabeth Ottenberg; brothers Glenn, Ralph; six
grandchildren.

Albert Bassett, 61 was Freedom director
The 25-year board member worked at newspapers in Orange County and
Texas.
Albert Willard Bassett, 61, a former member of the board of directors
of Freedom Communications Inc., died Wednesday after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Bassett, of St. Louis, served on the board for more than 25 years
and also served as the corporate treasurer.
"Al Bassett was among a small group of corporate directors who helped
guide Freedom through a stormy period in its history." said D.R. Segal,
president emeritus of Freedom Communications. "He was soft-spoken but firm in
his commitment of loyalty to the company and its goals. As chief executive
officer of Freedom, I came to depend upon his understanding of accounting and
business principles. In Al, I had a resource on whom I depended for help in
making the tough call. I am fortunate to have been his friend
Jim Rosse, Freedom's current CEO, said: "Although Al left the board
just after I came to Freedom, I valued his counsel and friendship. We will all
miss him."
Mr. Bassett started his career with Freedom at The Orange County
Register. From there, he was promoted to business manager of the La Habra Star
and the Brea Progress. He later was promoted to publisher of the Orange Daily
News.
He then moved to Texas as publisher of the Pampa Daily News. Mr.
Bassett's next position was as publisher of The McAllen Monitor in the Texas
Rio Grande Valley.
He is survived by his children, Thomas Bassett of St. Louis; Elizabeth
Bassett Ottenberg of Fort Collins, Colo.; Catherine Bassett Kieffer of Plano,
Texas; and Samuel Bassett of Austin, Texas; their mother, Mary Elizabeth
Hoiles Bassett, daughter of Clarence and Mabelle Hoiles; a brother, Gle
Bassett of Connecticut; and half-brother, Ralph Bassett of Florida; and six
grandchildren.
