Edward L. Bassett Jr., 59
PHILLIPSTON - Edward L. Bassett Jr., 59, of 95 Baldwinville Road, a retired
state maintenance foreman, died Friday in Athol Memorial Hospital after an
illness.
He leaves his wife of 38 years, Carol E. (White) Bassett; two sons, Stephen M.
Bassett of Royalston and Todd M. Bassett of Madbury, N.H.; three daughters,
Susan M. Sharp of Tulsa, Okla., Amy M. Bassett of Athol and Jessica M. Bassett
of Phillipston; two brothers, Tedie and Bernard Bassett, both of Petersham;
two sisters, Caroline Mousseau and Laura Jane Cox, both of Asheville, N.C.; 13
grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Edward L.
Bassett Sr. and Marion (Brigham) Bassett, and later lived in Petersham and
Athol. He lived here 38 years. He served in the Navy from 1956 to 1959. He
served in the Navy Reserve until 1962.
Mr. Bassett was the maintenance foreman at the Templeton Development Center,
formerly the Walter E. Fernald State School, where he worked for 20 years. He
retired in 1990. He was previously a steel hardener for nine years at Union
Twist Drill Co. in Athol. He was also an attendant for three years at Gardner
State Hospital. Mr. Bassett formerly served in the Phillipston Fire
Department. He was a member of Petersham Orthodox Congregational Church. He
was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Lower
Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to a charity. Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St.,
Athol, is directing arrangements.
